Yahoo Finance kills app for beleaguered RIM's BlackBerry ...

Jan 30, 2012 - 05:30 PM EST ? AAPL: 453.01 (+5.73, +1.28%) | NASDAQ: 2811.94 (-4.61, -0.16%)

?On Friday afternoon, Internet giant Yahoo announced that it was decommissioning 10 of its mobile apps, saying on a company blog that ??Our plan is to keep moving, to keep innovating, and to continuously measure and scrutinize what?s working and what isn?t ? so we can make room for great new products,?? Michael Comeau writes for Minyanville. ?Now I can understand Yahoo pulling back to reassess its app strategy on the ultra-competitive Apple iOS and Google Android platforms. However, I was truly surprised to see the company pull the Yahoo Finance app for Research In Motion?s Blackberry.?

?I remember a day when Blackberry was standard-issue equipment for all the soldiers in corporate America, a crowd that, as you can imagine, would be very likely to demand financial news and data on the go. Yahoo Finance is one of just a handful of Web properties that have stood the test of time. Think about it. Very few of the content sites that dominated in the late 1990s still have kingpin status today, and Yahoo Finance is one of them,? Comeau writes. ?Its position at the absolute top of the finance vertical hasn?t ever been even remotely threatened by competitors, including Google.?

?The fact that the dominant Web finance property is pulling away from the business-centric Blackberry platform is truly a sign of the times. Given that, maybe I shouldn?t have been surprised by Yahoo?s move,? Comeau writes. ?from an anecdotal perspective, I?ve been awfully surprised at the increasing number of ?suits? I see around New York City sporting iPhones and iPads. And when I say suits, I don?t mean young, dashing folks in fashion or media ? I?m talking about Fortune 500 types in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. Again, a crowd that would seem to want financial news and data on the go. And Yahoo [Finance] just decided that crowd isn?t big enough to support [on BlackBerry].?

MacDailyNews Take: In the early days of iPhone, we used to say to those still toting BlackBerry phones, ?Nice stylus.? Lately, we can?t find anybody with a BlackBerry to whom to be snide.

bejing-airTo paraphrase Otto von Bismarck, "iPads are like sausages, it is better not to see them being made." It's an ugly story. Over a hundred employees "injured by n-hexane, a toxic chemical that can cause nerve damage and paralysis" because its use "meant workers could clean more screens each minute." Other workers killed or injured by explosions. All so that iPads can be built as cheaply as possible, so that Apple can maintain its 44.7% gross margins. Isn't that awful? Yes, of course -- but let's try to maintain a nuanced perspective here. This is hardly a new story, and it's hardly unique to the tech industry. Think of the exploitation of child labor to harvest Egyptian cotton and Cote d'Ivoire cocoa. Plus ?a change; a decade ago it was Indonesian sweatshops and Indian fireworks exciting outrage. Think of the exploitation of Congolese workers to mine coltan, used in electronics everywhere. Show me a country with a large population of desperately poor people, and I'll show you horrific exploitation of impoverished workers. Please note, though, that the latter is an inevitable symptom of the former; and again, let's please try to maintain a sense of perspective. It's awful that a dozen Chinese workers were killed and hundreds injured building iPads--but at the same time, coal mining kills more than two thousand Chinese workers a year (down from almost 7000 ten years ago) and nobody's suddenly outraged about them. We in the West don't really seem to care that Chinese employees work under awful conditions and die in appalling numbers -- unless they make shiny things that we use. We claim we don't want people to suffer, but in fact we just don't want our iProducts tainted by that suffering. Isn't that more than a little hypocritical?

IMF chief: Some euro countries can boost growth

(AP) ? The head of the International Monetary Fund says that some countries that use the euro have the flexibility to boost growth to help shore up the eurozone economy.

Christine Lagarde says the eurozone should develop a "clear simple firewall" to contain the contagion of the debt crisis and restore trust. In addition, she says that the 17 countries that use the currency should continue tying their economies closer together over the months and years ahead.

Lagarde says the IMF has a role to play in restoring stability but that it needs more money. The IMF has said it needs around $500 billion more in financial firepower.

Lagarde spoke Saturday at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos.

Laidback, Literate, Potentially Ridiculous RPers Wanted.

Right. So I posted an interest check a few days ago. Today I posted an RP. Now I'm posting in RPers wanted, because if you aren't sick and tired of me yet, I intend to change that. I've really been craving this, and gosh darn it I am going to get it up off the ground.

I'm looking for RPers to join in a giant crossover of doom, destruction, mayhem, and probably a few dozen potential Armageddons. The criteria for the RPers I'm looking for is fairly simple.

  1. Must be literate. (Quality, though, not quantity.)
  2. Must be laidback and willing to goof around.
  3. Should, ideally, be willing to play canon characters from relevant fandoms. Not a necessity.
  4. Must be willing to have loud excited capslock discussions.
  5. Penguin ownership is a plus.

That's about as easy as it gets.

The fandoms involved so far are as follows:
BBC Sherlock
Supernatural
Doctor Who
Good Omens
Misfits

If you think you might want to play a character outside these fandoms, however (whether it be an original character or a character from another fandom), this list is negotiable.

So come on. We really really want to have you aboard.
Click me to enter!

If you view this thread and decide not to join in the fun, could you possibly either PM me or leave a post here addressing why you decided against it? I won't be offended, even if the answer is "it's a shitty idea." I'm just curious for future reference.

Thank you thank you!

(AP) ? Poland on Thursday signed an international copyright agreement which has sparked days of protests by Internet users who fear it will lead to online censorship.

Poland's ambassador to Japan, Jadwiga Rodowicz-Czechowska, signed the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA, in Tokyo, she told the all-news station TVN24.

ACTA is a far-reaching agreement that aims to harmonize international standards on protecting the rights of those who produce music, movies, pharmaceuticals, fashion, and a range of other products that often fall victim to intellectual property theft.

It shares some similarities with the hotly debated Stop Online Piracy Act in the U.S., which was shelved by lawmakers last week after Wikipedia and Google blacked out or partially obscured their websites for a day in protest.

Poland was one of several European Union countries to sign ACTA on Thursday, but it appeared to be the only place where support for the agreement has caused outrage and protests by Internet activists.

Several other industrialized countries, including the United States, Canada and South Korea, already signed it last year.

Poland's support for ACTA has sparked attacks on Polish government websites by a group calling itself "Anonymous" that left them unreachable for days, as well as street protests in several Polish cities.

ACTA aims to fight the online piracy of movies and music, and those opposed to it fear that it will also lead authorities to block content on the Internet. Critics also say governments have negotiated the agreement in secret and failed to consult with their societies along the way.

Thousands of people took to the streets in past days across Poland to voice their outrage over ACTA. Some taped their mouths shut in a sign that they fear their online freedom of expression will be hampered by it.

In reaction to the widespread opposition, Polish leaders have been struggling to allay fears over it.

Poland's Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski defended his government's position in a TV interview Wednesday evening, arguing that ACTA is not as threatening as young people fear.

But he said the Internet should not be allowed to become a space of "legal anarchy."

"We believe that theft on a massive scale of intellectual property is not a good thing," Sikorski said.

Tired and broke, Santorum heads home to do taxes (AP)

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. ? Rick Santorum is tired, almost broke ? and going home.

The former Pennsylvania senator is taking a pause from Florida campaigning just days before the Tuesday primary that even he expects to deal him a third consecutive loss.

Santorum says he would rather spend his Saturday sitting at his kitchen table doing his taxes than campaigning in a state where the race for the Republican presidential nomination has become a two-man fight between Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.

The cash-strapped candidate acknowledges that he simply can't keep up with the GOP front-runners in Florida.

"We're going to talk about the Constitution and talk about being a strong conservative," Santorum said at an event here this week. "And that's all we can do."

Outside advisers are urging him to pack up in Florida completely and not spend another minute in a state where he is cruising toward a loss. But Santorum insisted on Friday that he would return once he has readied his taxes for public release.

"I'm coming back within 24 hours, and I'm here through up to election day," Santorum told Fox News. "I've spent every minute here in Florida, and I'm going to work in Florida."

Santorum has yet to announce his schedule for Florida's primary day. He says it was a mistake for him to remain in South Carolina on its voting day.

"We can't let grass grow," he told reporters Thursday. "South Carolina Election Day was sort of a wasted day for us."

He pledged to continue his campaign regardless of the Florida outcome.

It's a grim period for Santorum, who just three weeks ago was riding high on a strong finish in the Iowa caucuses; after first saying the result was a virtual tie with Romney, the Iowa GOP ultimately declared Santorum the winner. The victory was short-lived. He lost big in both New Hampshire and South Carolina.

He faced an uphill battle even before the race turned to Florida. He doesn't have the money to spend on television ads in Florida's expensive media markets. He couldn't compete with the thousands-strong crowds his rivals have been drawing. And he wasn't able to find a moment here that crystalized the rationale for his candidacy.

"Other candidates tell you they need your help," Santorum told Florida Republicans this week, almost pleading. "They're lying. I really need your help."

But help didn't come ? at least in this state ? for a candidate who is visibly exhausted and running on, at most, four hours of sleep each night.

So Santorum is going home to Pennsylvania, which he represented in the Senate, and Virginia, where he lives with his wife and seven children, to get some rest and, he says, prepare his own taxes. He also plans fundraisers in both states as he works to rebuild his campaign account to pay for upcoming contests in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado.

Santorum also is looking at Arizona and Michigan, states that vote at the end of February ? if he makes it that far.

His inner circle of advisers is looking at the campaign checkbook. They say they can keep a lean campaign rolling in case Gingrich or Romney implode.

"This race is just starting. It's a three-man race," Santorum insists. "We're going to be in this race for the long term."

For now, at least, polls show Santorum dramatically trailing in Florida, the largest and most diverse state in the early nominating schedule. And he seems to be coming up short as he tries to win over voters with his everyman persona.

"I wish he had a little more passion in the belly," said Don Waldt, a Punta Gorda retiree who attended a Santorum rally at dusk this week. "He is conservative and authentic. But he isn't on top and doesn't seem to have a clear path to the top."

Nintendo posts loss on strong yen, weak sales

Nintendo Co. sank into losses for the April-December period last year, battered by a price cut for its 3DS handheld machine and a strong yen that eroded earnings. (AP) ? Nintendo Co. sank to losses for the April-December period, battered by a price cut for its 3DS handheld, a strong yen that erodes overseas earnings and competition from mobile devices such as the iPhone that offer games-on-the-go.

The Japanese video game machine maker behind the Super Mario and Pokemon franchises said Thursday it now expects to sell far fewer of its 3DS machines, which feature three-dimensional images. It is forecasting sales of 14 million machines for the fiscal year through March 2012, down from an earlier 16 million. That's despite a price cut for the 3DS in August.

Nintendo, which also makes the Wii home console, posted a loss of 48.35 billion yen ($627.9 million) for the first nine months through December. That was a reversal from a 49.56 billion yen profit the same period in 2010. Nintendo did not break down quarterly numbers.

The company said it will have Wii U, the successor to the Wii, ready in time for the year-end holiday season. Earlier, it had said the machine, which has a touch-screen controller, will go on sale in the latter half of this year. But some had been skeptical whether it would be ready. Nintendo hasn't announced prices.

Kyoto-based Nintendo also lowered its annual earnings forecast to a 65 billion yen ($844 million) loss, much larger than the 20 billion yen ($260 million) loss projected earlier. It posted a 77.62 billion yen profit the previous fiscal year.

Nintendo's past success has come from the appeal of its products to so-called casual gamers ? people who now turn to smartphones and tablet devices such as the iPad from Apple Inc. to enjoy games.

The demand for the Wii has also diminished in recent months.

Nintendo is now expecting to sell 10 million Wii machines in the year ending March, down from an initial estimate of 13 million, which was revised lower to 12 million in July.

Nintendo's nine-month sales dropped 31.2 percent to 556.17 billion yen from the same period the previous year.

The numbers are a disappointment as they include the key year-end holiday season.

"Sales of the 3DS were strong in Japan, but Christmas shopping got to a late start overall in the U.S. and Europe," said Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa. "But we are upbeat about hardware and software sales for next fiscal year."

Worldwide sales of the 3DS for the nine months totaled 11.43 million, the company said. Game software for the 3DS like "Super Mario 3D Land" became million sellers, but games from outside companies did not fare as well, it said.

Competition in portable gaming is heating up with the arrival of the PlayStation Vita from Japanese electronics and entertainment company Sony Corp. Vita went on sale in Japan in December and next month in the U.S. and Europe.

Nintendo has continuously outpaced Sony in portable game sales with its hit DS machines.

The strong yen has also hurt Nintendo's bottom line. The dollar has been trading at about 77 yen lately, down from about 83 yen a year earlier.

Nintendo stock slid 0.6 percent to 10,790 yen in Tokyo.

Guest Post: Understanding Tuition Refund Insurance | SimpleTuition ...

By: Erika Stewart

In the last few years, tuition for college has grown faster than inflation. As we struggle to be able to afford payments, we often overlook the possibility that the tuition paid to schools could be wasted if the student is forced to withdraw for medical reasons.

Tuition refund insurance exists to provide peace of mind in case this circumstance arises and can put tuition money back in the pocket of students and parents. This type of plan can be an alternative or supplement to student health insurance if the student if facing severe health problems.

Many colleges have their own refund policies and it is important to understand them before taking out tuition refund insurance. Some universities will limit the ability to get a tuition refund after a certain time has passed into the school year, such as 30 days. Others base their refund policy on if a student is receiving various kinds of financial aid.

Federal law governs the federal financial aid that students receive in the case that he or she withdraws from school. The R2T4 policy decrees that students must return any unearned federal financial aid back to the government. The percentage of earned financial aid is prorated based on how much of the school term the student has completed. A 60 percent term completion counts as 100 percent as far as federal student aid is concerned.

Tuition refund insurance is only recommended for students who have serious pre-existing health conditions or illnesses that would cause a student to withdraw during their studies. Common kinds of coverage include withdrawal from school due to illness or injury as well as death of the student or parent/guardian. Other coverage types include job loss, withdrawals due to mental health conditions, and expulsion or suspension on academic or disciplinary grounds.

Tuition Refund Insurance Vs. Student Health Insurance
Keep in mind that tuition refund insurance is not equivalent to taking out health insurance plans. Most schools will still require you to buy health insurance for students or prove that the students are covered under a plan owned by a parent or guardian. These two plans are different and should not be confused with each other.

Student health insurance can ensure that health and medical costs that are incurred while at school are not prohibitive. Health insurance for students is a good bet for nearly every child who is in college or university. On the other hand, tuition refund insurance should only be purchased in the case that the probability of withdrawal is very high.

Tuition refund insurance will usually cost parents and students 1 to 5 percent of the coverage value, usually the cost of tuition. Premiums can be a good investment if the threat of withdrawal due to health reasons is serious and the family can recoup a significant portion of the school?s tuition cost.

WWE Raw SuperShow results: Laurinaitis takes a nap

PHOENIX ? With only one week until the 25th Anniversary of the Royal Rumble, calling WWE Raw SuperShow "eventful" would be a gross understatement. Chris Jericho informed the WWE Universe that "it's going to be the end of the world as you know it," while Dolph Ziggler managed to upstage WWE Champion CM Punk on two separate occasions. Also, Zack Ryder was horrifically chokeslammed through the entrance stage by Kane in a Falls Count Anywhere Match.

WWE Champion CM Punk vs. John Laurinaitis did not take place (PHOTOS | WATCH)
Moments before Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis battled WWE Champion CM Punk, he received word from WWE's Board of Directors that his job performance would be evaluated. The Board of Directors is bringing Mr. Laurinaitis' decision-making into question, especially his declaration that he would screw CM Punk at Royal Rumble. Furthermore, the Executive Vice President of Talent Relations' job performance would be evaluated personally by WWE's COO, Triple H.?

Ziggler hits the Zig ZagDavid Otunga and Mr. Laurinaitis read the letter to CM Punk inside the squared circle. Mr. Laurinaitis apologized to Punk, announcing he would fairly call the WWE Title Match at Royal Rumble and that Mick Foley was officially an entrant in the Royal Rumble Match. However, the Interim Raw General Manager also informed the WWE Champion that their match would not take place and Punk would battle David Otunga. This prompted Otunga to attack The Voice of the Voiceless.

Otunga's attack was short-lived and CM Punk was soon left alone in the ring with Mr. Laurinaitis. The Executive Vice President of Talent Relations extended his hand in peace, but was reciprocated with a resounding GTS from the WWE Champion. This bold move by The Second City Savior was quickly upstaged when Dolph Ziggler snuck into the ring and took down his Royal Rumble opponent with the Zig Zag.

R-Truth vs. The MizR-Truth def. The Miz (PHOTOS | WATCH)
Earlier in the evening, the former tag team partners engaged in a heated argument during a backstage interview. As a result, Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis informed the two Superstars that the loser of the match would be the first entrant in the Royal Rumble Match. When the opening bell rang, the two bitter rivals each did their best to gain an early advantage in the contest. Momentum swings were fairly even at first, but it was R-Truth who ultimately bested The Awesome One. As a result, The Miz will certainly have the odds stacked against him in the Royal Rumble Match.

Brodus Clay def. Heath Slater (PHOTOS | WATCH)
The Funkasaurus continued to show that he had all the right moves and picked up a victory against Heath Slater on WWE Raw SuperShow. The Superstar hailing from Planet Funk made quick work of The One Man Southern Rock Band and immediately got back to getting his groove on. William Regal watched from the announce table, criticizing Clay?s every move. On SmackDown, Regal was unceremoniously decimated by The Funkasaurus after busting some moves of his own.

Sheamus def. Jindar Mahal? (PHOTOS | WATCH)
Jinder Mahal failed to capture a victory over The Celtic Warrior on WWE Raw SuperShow. With Wade Barrett joining the commentary team, he watched as Sheamus built a great deal of momentum and pummeled Mahal. While the Punjabi Superstar did mount a brief offense, he was stopped in his tracks by a powerful Brogue Kick. Following the contest, The Great White made sure to reaffirm his commitment to win the Royal Rumble Match.

Zack Ryder injuredZack Ryder vs. Kane ended in a No Contest (PHOTOS | WATCH)
The former United States Champion proved for a second week in a row that he is a true fighter. After losing the U.S. Title in part to injuries suffered at the hands of Kane one week prior, Long Island Iced-Z stood up against The Big Red Monster in a Falls Count Anywhere Match. Still injured, Ryder tried to go after Kane early-on, but Kane quickly overpowered his opponent and targeted his injured ribs.

As Eve begged Kane to show mercy, it seemed to only enrage The Big Red Monster further. However, even as he took tortuous punishment, Ryder continued to kick out of Kane?s pinfall attempts. As they battled through the crowd, the two ring warriors made their way to the entrance area. After relentless punishment that left the WWE Universe cringing with every strike, Kane chokeslammed Ryder through the stage. After weeks of bizarre behavior since returning to WWE, Chris Jericho seemed poised to address all the questions of the WWE Universe with the return of Jericho?s ?Highlight Reel.? With the Jeri-Tron 5000 back to full power, Jericho played a video highlighting his storied career. He then grabbed a microphone and said, ?This Sunday at the Royal Rumble, it?s going to be the end of the world as you know it.? The first-ever Undisputed Champion then exited the arena.

Dolph Ziggler & U.S. Champion Jack Swagger def.? WWE Champion CM Punk & John Cena (PHOTOS | WATCH)
In an impromptu tag team match, John Cena and CM Punk immediately showed great teamwork in an effort to take out their frustrations with Mr. Laurinaitis. With momentum not in their favor, Ziggler and Swagger tried to regroup and re-strategize. With a combination of pure athleticism and show-boating, The All-American American and No. 1 contender to the WWE Title built a fair amount of momentum against Cena. But the fighting spirit deep within the Cenation leader overpowered Swagger with an Attitude Adjustment paving the way for the WWE Champion to get inside the squared circle. However, as The Voice of the Voiceless ascended the ropes to elbow drop Ziggler, Mr. Laurinaitis distracted Punk, allowing The Show-Off to capture the victory.

In response, CM Punk challenged the Executive Vice President of Talent Relations to a match tonight and Mr. Laurinaitis accepted!

WWE Champion CM Punk called out Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis (PHOTOS)
One week after unloading a verbal tirade on Mr. Laurinaitis, The Voice of the Voiceless opened WWE Raw SuperShow by calling out the Executive Vice President of Talent Relations, and demanding he admit that he will screw Punk at Royal Rumble. To the surprise of the WWE Universe, John Cena made his way to the ring as Mr. Laurinaitis did not. Cena took the opportunity to demand a match with Kane on Raw and to grant Zack Ryder a U.S. Title rematch.

The Interim Raw General Manager finally appeared and announced that Zack Ryder would face Kane in a Falls Count Anywhere Match tonight. He also declared that if Cena interfered, Long Island Iced-Z would never have another U.S. Title opportunity. Mr. Laurinaitis then announced that CM Punk and John Cena would battle Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler next!

Hello, hello. Your friendly neighbor Nabu here, to express interest in this rather interesting Roleplay of yours... It's a pleasure to meet you, Lost Socks. I think your nickname will be Socksy. Because I like it like that. Or Socksi. Or iSocks. Yeah, haha. I love it, this sounds good. I'd like to join this a lot. But, I wanted to ask, whether I'd have to create a big character profile, because... I feel like this Roleplay would work really well if we let our characters develop within the Roleplay!

Anyway, just wanted to say, I want in.

EDIT: When I say big character sheet, I mean really descriptive.

Well that depends on what you would call really descriptive. I don't call for a lot of information, if that's what you're wondering. As long as you aren't incredibly vague then we shouldn't have any problems. :D And I like Socksy. ^^

Great, then we'll have no problems! And, good, I'm glad you like it.

Thunderstorms, tornadoes possible in southern U.S. (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Severe thunderstorms were expected to spread across several southeastern U.S. states on Sunday into Monday with tornadoes, high winds and large hail possible, weather forecasters said.

The potential for severe storms stretched from the Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi to southern Indiana and Ohio, according to AccuWeather.com meteorologist Bill Deger.

"Some of the thunderstorms are even expected to spawn tornadoes, making for an especially dangerous situation given the veil of night," Deger said.

In Alabama, residents were bracing for storms that could hit after dark on Sunday or overnight with a strong cold front from the west combining with warm moist air flowing up from the Gulf of Mexico, said Mary Keiser, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Birmingham, Alabama.

"The best dynamics for this are going to be across the northwest part of the state and lesser so as you move to the southeast part of the state," Keiser said of the forecast for severe weather to strike in Alabama.

The weather service said thunderstorms could bring wind gusts up to 80 mph, tornadoes or gulf ball-sized hail in Mississippi. Farther west, the weather service warned of a high fire danger in Texas with wind gusts of up to 50 mph.

Weather.com said the greatest tornado threat appeared to be in eastern Arkansas, western Tennessee, northern Louisiana and northern Mississippi.

In Reno, Nevada, meanwhile, snowfall provided welcome relief to firefighters who were monitoring remaining hotspots from a blaze that raged near the outskirts of the city beginning Thursday, destroying 30 houses and prompting thousands of people to flee their homes.

"As long as we keep on getting snow instead of rain, it looks like we'll be okay, at least for the next couple of days," said Mark Regan, spokesman for the Sierra Fire Protection District.

Rain had threatened the area with flash flooding on Friday night. Emergency responders had the blaze 100 percent contained as of Saturday, and all residents have been allowed to return to their homes, Regan said.

In the upper Midwest, freezing drizzle was expected to make roads and sidewalks slippery from southeastern Minnesota into Wisconsin, changing to snow later Sunday, the weather service said. Up to 4 inches of snow was expected farther north in southeast North Dakota and west central Minnesota.

In the northeast United States, a fast-moving storm from central Pennsylvania eastward dropped up to a foot of snow in parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts on Saturday.

HBT: MVP Braun states case vs. PED suspension

Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun finally got his day in court on Thursday afternoon. Here?s the story, from reporters Bill Madden, Andy Martino and Teri Thompson of the New York Daily News:

Ryan Braun, the National League?s Most Valuable Player, pleaded his case Thursday before a three-member panel that will decide whether he faces a 50-game suspension for testing positive for elevated levels of testosterone.

The appeal came just two days before Braun will accept his MVP award at the New York Chapter of the Baseball Writers? Association of America?s dinner Saturday night at the New York Hilton, sources familiar with Braun told the Daily News.

The panel, made up of?MLB Players Association executive director?Michael Weiner, MLB executive vice president for labor relations?Rob Manfred?and independent arbitrator Shyam Das, is not expected to reach a decision before Braun accepts his award. But our guess would be that it won?t take more than a week.

Braun is?maintaining a cry of innocence, but that early-October PED test showed insanely high levels of synthetic testosterone in his bloodstream and you have to wonder how he could possibly attempt to prove that it wasn?t ever there. Calling the test result a false-positive isn?t going to cut it, and arguing that something non performance-enhancing triggered the positive reading would require a whole lot of convincing.

Inter advances to Italian Cup quarterfinals

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:56 p.m. ET Jan. 19, 2012

MILAN (AP) -Inter Milan's recent renaissance gathered more momentum with a 2-1 win over Genoa on Thursday that put the club into the Italian Cup quarterfinals.

Brazil right back Maicon opened the scoring in the ninth minute at the San Siro and midfielder Andrea Poli doubled the lead with his first goal for Inter in the 50th, giving the Milan club its seventh consecutive win in all competitions.

Inter's current streak has helped the club close the gap to Serie A leader Juventus to six points approaching the season's midpoint.

Slovenian midfielder Valter Birsa pulled one back for Genoa in added time.

Aiming for its third consecutive cup title, Inter will next face Napoli.

The other quarterfinal matchups are Juventus vs. Roma, Lazio vs. AC Milan and Siena vs. Chievo Verona.

Maicon scored with a spectacular curving shot into the top left corner from outside the area and Poli used a volley to take advantage of an over-the-shoulder pass from Joel Obi.

Inter rested its usual starting goalkeeper Julio Cesar and forward Diego Milito, who scored the winner in Sunday's 1-0 derby victory over Milan.

Playmaker Wesley Sneijder started, however, and again showed he's regaining his form after missing more than two months with a right leg muscle injury. The Netherlands playmaker missed high with a long shot two minutes in and had another solid effort pushed away by Genoa goalkeeper Cristiano Lupatelli in the 30th.

Genoa rested several usual starters, including goalkeeper Sebastien Frey and strikers Alberto Gilardino and Rodrigo Palacio.
