MintLife Blog | Personal Finance News & Advice | The Secret to ...

Minimal Interior

Recently a reporter asked me for financial advice for new college graduates. What I came up with was nothing new: the best financial move a new grad can make is to continue living like a college student for as long as they can stand it.

That means Spartan housing, an old car (or no car), and lots of contact with friends as a substitute for more expensive entertainment. Put your salary toward paying off student loans and developing your career skills.

I?ve been thinking about this recently and I?d like to amend the recommendation: continue living like a college student for as long as you can stand it, preferably for the rest of your life.

What makes you happy?

My wife grew up in a family of eight ? three sons, three daughters ? in a three-bedroom house in Portland, Oregon. The girls shared one bedroom and the boys, another.

Oh, and there was only one bathroom, and presumably some kind of parliamentary procedure for determining whose turn it was in the morning.

Meanwhile, across town, my two brothers and I lived in a three-story Cape Cod. My brothers shared a room; I got the basement to myself, complete with a door to the outside, which I used for late-night Taco Bell runs.

And I could stay up and watch Letterman or MTV?s?120 Minutes?anytime I wanted without disturbing anyone or having to fight over the remote.

I asked my wife this week whether her childhood was impoverished by the fact that she had to share a bedroom. She gave a dismissive laugh and a one-word answer: no.

In fact, I?m positive that if we had a happy childhood showdown, she would win. I was moodier and had fewer friends. Most of the time, the basement wasn?t an all-night party pad; it was just lonely.

This is exactly what psychologists who study happiness would predict: given that we both lived in housing that met a basic level of safety and comfort, other factors in our lives would so overwhelm our housing choices that housing would have almost no effect on our overall quality of life.

As?The Guardian?put it recently:

?among . . . generally well-housed populations, satisfaction with housing was less important to happiness overall than other factors including family life, marriage, financial situation, health, job, leisure time, friendships and community.?

In other words, everything in life you actually care about. But these things are largely invisible. Housing is tangible.

What makes you happy? Take two.

About a decade ago, Nobel prizewinning psychologist Daniel Kahneman asked 900 working women in Texas which day-to-day activities they most enjoyed and which made them miserable.

Unlike previous such surveys, Kahneman asked the women to keep a journal so they could record their mental state in the midst of each activity rather than recall an unrealistically rosy or bleak image later.

The results?(on page 11 of the paper) have become famous and have been largely confirmed in other populations by other researchers; it?s not just professional Texas women.

The most universally enjoyed activity, by a large margin? Sex (duh). Among the five most-loathed activities, however, three of them are closely related to housing choice: housework, evening commute, and morning commute.

We choose large houses because we believe the interior of the house has a lot to do with our family?s happiness; there?s no evidence for that. Along with the square footage, we get more housework and usually a longer commute, which make us demonstrably miserable.

When you ask economists how people should deploy a financial windfall for maximum happiness, they tend to answer, ?Give generously and shorten your commute.?

Now, to be fair: maybe bigger houses don?t do much for parents but they make kids happier and healthier. The evidence for this is slim: most research on children and housing looks, reasonably enough, at children in housing projects and what we can do to make their lives less miserable.

The idea that caring parents who choose to raise their children in a shared bedroom or an apartment are doing their kids present or future harm would make most reputable child psychologists and academics laugh.

So why do so many parents act as if it?s an established fact?

This question isn?t just about the psychology of happiness; it?s about personal finance. Living in a smaller space closer to your job may or may not be cheaper, on the whole, than a larger suburban house with a longer commute (although it certainly can be).

But it tends to insulate families from certain common financial shocks such as rising gas prices and dropping home values, which have hit distant suburbs particularly hard in most markets.

A tiny little experiment

My wife and daughter and I live in a 750 square foot two-bedroom apartment. By global standards, this is absolutely deluxe, and I have no complaints.

Last summer, however, we rented a 260 square foot apartment for a month. It had a small kitchen, one bathroom, and one bedroom with a sofa bed and an extra mattress; we converted that room into a living and dining room during the day.

We didn?t do it to save money; the tiny apartment actually cost more than our Seattle home. That?s because it was in central Tokyo.

To be clear, most Tokyo families don?t live in such small apartments; the average apartment for a family of three is comparable in size to our Seattle apartment. But this place was affordable and in a cool neighborhood.

Before our trip, I worried a lot about how we would adjust to such a tiny living space, whether I?d cringe every day on returning to our temporary home, and eventually go psycho like a rat in a cage.

It was fine, of course?nice, even. This proves nothing, because we were on vacation and it was all part of the adventure of living abroad. We had abundant time for socializing, relaxing, and eating lunch and dinner, all highly ranked on Kahneman?s survey.

When we got back to Seattle, we were all shocked at how much?stuff?awaited us in our apartment.

Since then, I?ve spent a lot of time daydreaming about what it would be like to live in that little apartment permanently, after the vacation euphoria wore off.

We?d have to go out into Japan, deal every day with real-life immigrant problems, and come home to a house with no privacy.

I think we?d gripe about it the way people complain about having to share a bedroom with their sibling: one of those little annoyances that doesn?t really matter.

LOGAN COUNTY, Okla. ? Mother of two, Kelly Shipley has been living on edge lately.?

She said, ?It?s scary; I don?t feel safe anymore.?

Authorities in Logan and Oklahoma counties said there has been a dramatic spike in home burglaries recently.

The crooks are not only breaking into cars; they have become even more brazen.

Logan Co. Chief Deputy Rob Groseclose said, ?As of late, we?ve had people take garage door openers to burglarize your home.?

Authorities?said the victims are essentially giving criminals a key to their house.

The intruders are walking around neighborhoods and checking car doors.

When they find an unlocked car, they go straight to the visor and your garage door opener.

Groseclose said, ?That? gives them?access to your house while you?re sleeping.?

It happened Tuesday morning to Angela MacKinnon?s neighbor.?

?She yelled and they left,? MacKinnon said. ?But she later found they had taken her purse.?

There have been about a half-dozen similar reports recently in northwest Oklahoma County.

?Society is so used to that,? Groseclose said ?We know where our garage door opener is all the time but so do the bad guys. So that?s a target they?ll look for, the opener. It?s a key to your house, absolutely.?

Police encourage homeowners to take every measure of security including locking the door from the garage to your house and keeping that remote out of sight.

Kelly Shipley isn?t taking and chances.

?We make sure the door is locked and the garage is shut at all times,? she said. ?We are keeping an eye on everything.?

(AP) ? In ads, his own remarks and most recently the words of a top supporter, Republican Mitt Romney seems determined to soften emphasis on abortion and ignore facts critical to the auto industry as he seeks support from key voting groups in the waning days of a close race for the White House.

Even some Republicans as well as the automakers say Romney's campaign went too far with recent TV and radio ads that claim both Chrysler and General Motors are adding jobs in China at the expense of workers in Ohio.

"Under President Obama, GM cut 15,000 American jobs, but they are planning to double the number of cars built in China, which means 15,000 more jobs for China," said a radio ad running in Toledo and Dayton, where thousands of people rely on the auto industry for jobs.

"And now comes word that Chrysler is starting to build cars in, you guessed it, China."

The two named auto companies moved quickly to rebut the notion that they are moving U.S. jobs overseas.

"Chrysler Group's production plans for the Jeep brand have become the focus of public debate," CEO Sergio Marchionne wrote in an email sent to employees Tuesday. "I feel obliged to unambiguously restate our position: Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China."

"We've clearly entered some parallel universe during these last few days," said Greg Martin, a spokesman for GM. "No amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the U.S. and repatriating profits back to this country."

Romney's campaign declined to comment.

The ads mark Romney's latest attempt to reframe the debate on an issue that has plagued him from the beginning of his candidacy in Ohio, a crucial battleground state that has deep roots in the auto industry. He has long opposed the auto bailout industry that Obama's administration facilitated in the early days of the administration, saying he would not have permitted the government to loan General Motors and Chrysler federal funds to help them through a managed bankruptcy.

Several Republican strategists said the Romney campaign probably went too far by airing a TV ad in Ohio that suggests Jeep will move some operations out the state.

"It's the kind of thing that happens late in the campaign, when everybody's tired and you're not quite yourself," said veteran GOP strategist Mike McKenna of Richmond, Va. "It didn't help."

He added, "But I don't think it's a big thing. At this point, everybody has made up their mind."

Democrats have taken notice ? and exception ? to Romney's recent maneuvering.

Campaigning for Obama in Youngstown on Monday, former President Bill Clinton said Jeep has called Romney's claim "the biggest load of bull in the world." Vice President Joe Biden, added it was "bizarre."

In Michigan, Obama's campaign began airing an ad touting his record on the auto bailout. It's running in response to a Michigan spot from the independent group Restore Our Future, which supports Romney.

Romney's approach to abortion is more a matter of a change in tone, although one campaign surrogate, former Sen. Norm Coleman, recently assured an audience that the Supreme Court's 1973 opinion legalizing abortion is unlikely to be overturned if the Republican challenger wins the election.

Appearing in Beechwood, Ohio, on Monday, the former Minnesota senator suggested that abortion shouldn't be a paramount issue. "You've got to decide what's important right now, what's going to impact you right now," Coleman said in suburban Columbus where Romney is working to woo suburban women voters, many of whom support abortion rights.

"President Bush was president for eight years, Roe v. Wade wasn't reversed. He had two Supreme Court picks, Roe v. Wade wasn't reversed. It's not going to be reversed," Coleman said.

In an interview on Tuesday, Coleman told The Associated Press he had been speaking on his own behalf, and not for Romney.

He said he meant that the decision is longstanding precedent, and that Republicans would fight over issues like parental notification and partial birth abortion rather than Roe v Wade itself.

Romney himself has repeatedly said that he would like to see Roe v. Wade overturned, and promised to look for Supreme Court appointees who have opposed abortion rights. But Romney's campaign has also been airing an ad in Virginia that emphasizes he believes abortion "should be an option" in some cases, like rape, incest or where the health of the mother is threatened.

And he drew attention earlier this fall when he said in Iowa that laws restricting access to abortion would not be a priority if he wins the White House.

Under pressure from some conservatives, he reaffirmed his opposition to abortion in most cases the next day.

The Supreme Court has split 5-4 in recent years on some abortion-related cases. With several justices in their 70s, the next president may well have the opportunity to name one or more replacements.

PST: Concern in Seattle over Eddie's hamstring

All eyes and ears around the rave green crowd will be focused on Eddie Johnson?s hamstring today.

The Seattle Sounders leading scorer (14 goals) came off the field in the first half last night with a strained hamstring. Team officials will have a better diagnosis and prognosis following an MRI today. (Whether they will share it with us with 100 percent transparency, who knows?)

Here?s what Johnson said about it last night via the Seattle Times:

I made a couple long runs early in the game and my hammy kind of tightened up on me. My game is (made up) of making hard runs behind the back four, and there was a play where I tried to set the defender up like I was going to come for the ball and check away, and I felt a big cramp in my hamstring.

?I know what that feeling feels like. I was smart. I came out. I didn?t try to force it, but there?s definitely something there. If I had played, I?d have been restricted. The smart thing was for me to do what?s best for the team and come out. We?ll get an MRI on Monday and see what?s going on.?

This will not be devastating news for Seattle, but it?s certainly bad news. The West field is tough. Real Salt Lake is up first, and then a date with the Galaxy in all likelihood.

Fredy Montero is playing well, so the goal-scoring cupboard is hardly bare. But no one who would replace Johnson as the Sounders most advanced striker comes close to offering what the U.S. international and MLS All-Star does, solidly-timed runs into the penalty area and the athletic ability to deliver once he accesses those areas.

There is also concern about center back Jeff Parke, who also left last night?s match, although there is more cover there.

Researchers to debate the call for sexual abstinence education in schools

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Introducing abstinence education into UK schools could be a less effective substitute for comprehensive Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) aimed at children and young adults, say a research team led by Sheffield Hallam University.

As part of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science 2012, Sheffield Hallam and partners will host a one day event to debate the issues surrounding abstinence education.

Dr Julia Hirst, from the Public Health Hub at Sheffield Hallam, says "We hope to bring together politicians, teachers, youth workers, young people and their parents to discuss the re-emergence in our society of views promoting abstinence education in schools and youth settings."

Research shows that existing evidence fails to support the view that teaching abstinence from sexual activity is the only certain way to avoid unintended pregnancy, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and HIV.

"Extensive research undertaken in the US points to negative outcomes associated with abstinence education including increased risks of unprotected sex and a more reluctance to seek advice or treatment related to sexual health and relationship matters," says Steve Slack, Director of the Centre for Sexual Health and HIV in Sheffield.

There is clear evidence that access to comprehensive SRE can have positive effects in terms of increasing the age of a first sexual encounter.

"By widening understanding of safer sexual practices and equipping young people with the skills and confidence to protect their sexual and emotional health reduces the risk of unprotected sex, unwanted sex, unwanted pregnancies, and STI's. Comprehensive SRE also includes strategies for young people who want support in abstaining from sexual activity." Dr Hirst points out.

Research shows that comprehensive sex education should include a greater focus on the issue of relationships, as well as sexuality, include more discussion of safer sexual activity and further debate regarding values and up-bringing in shaping attitudes to sex.

Steve Slack agrees: "Our discussions with young people consistently suggest that while there are pockets of good practice in terms of SRE in the UK, sex education overall is too little and too late and often fails to address young people's expressed needs for across-the-board sex and relationships education."

"If we look to countries with the lowest rates of unwanted pregnancy and STIs, the least relationship abuse and more attention paid to relationships, for example, the Netherlands or Sweden; these are the countries which have age-appropriate SRE embedded in their curriculum and it is supported by youth friendly sexual health services and well-informed parents. This is what we would like to see for young people in this country." Dr Hirst concludes.

Crew of tall ship off NC abandons ship in storm

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) ? Donning survival suits and boarding life boats, the crew of a tall ship in distress off North Carolina's Outer Banks abandoned the vessel as Hurricane Sandy swirled toward the East Coast, the Coast Guard said early Monday.

The 17 people aboard the HMS Bounty got into two 25-foot lifeboats with canopies, wearing survival suits and life jackets, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class David Weydert in Portsmouth, Va., said.

The Coast Guard was trying to determine whether to use cutters or helicopters to rescue the crew, based on the current ocean conditions, Weydert said. Winds of 40 mph and 18-foot seas were reported at the ship, about 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C.

The Coast Guard initially received a call from the owner of the 180-foot, three mast tall ship, HMS Bounty, late Sunday evening, saying she had lost communication with the vessel's crew.

The Coast Guard in Portsmouth later received a signal from the emergency position indicating radio beacon of the Bounty, confirming the position.

An air crew from Elizabeth City, N.C., sent an HC-130 Hercules aircraft that established communications with the Bounty's crew.

The vessel was taking on water and had no propulsion.

The ship is a replica of the one made famous in the 1960 MGM film "Mutiny on the Bounty" and it was used in that film, which starred Marlin Brando. The ship was also used in the film "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."

Thai cabinet reshuffle sees return of Thaksin loyalists

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A cabinet reshuffle in Thailand has brought loyal allies of self-exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra into the government led by his sister, consolidating his grip on power as he bides his time before making a serious effort to come home.

Thaksin, ousted by the army in 2006, lives abroad to avoid a prison sentence for abuse of power but is widely thought to be running Southeast Asia's second-largest economy from bases in Dubai and elsewhere through Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

A former telecoms tycoon who first became prime minister in 2001, Thaksin enjoys huge support among the rural masses but has powerful enemies among the conservative elite, the military and royalist activists, all of whom, he says, undermined his governments or those of his allies.

Thaksin has set no date for his return which would be deeply divisive. Many analysts believe it could upset a fragile peace that has been in place since the army crushed protests by his supporters in mid-2010 and about 90 people were killed.

For now, Thaksin is moving his loyalists into position while Yingluck rides high in opinion polls and does not do anything to antagonize Thaksin's powerful enemies, in particular those in the army.

"We are seeing a Thaksin renaissance, with his top people being installed," said Kan Yuenyong, director of Siam Intelligence Unit, a private think tank in Bangkok.

The 23 new cabinet names endorsed on Sunday by King Bhumibol Adulyadej include six members of Thaksin's disbanded Thai Rak Thai party who re-entered politics after a five-year political ban against them for electoral fraud ended in May.

Other posts in the civil service and police have gone to Thaksin loyalists including Paradorn Pattanathabutr, who was made secretary-general of the country's National Security Council and this month said Thaksin was "like a brother".

For the time being, Thaksin has not tried to interfere too much with the army and powerful judiciary and risk stirring up a storm.

Also, plans to amend the constitution to facilitate his return that threatened to galvanize the opposition earlier this year have been put on the back burner.

"Time is on Thaksin's side, and after a year the Shinawatras have decided to go slow because it's better to be in the government than out of government," Kan said.

But in a reminder of instability and a taste of what could be in store, an anti-government rally on Sunday drew up to 10,000 people led by Boonlert Kaewprasit, a retired military officer, taking aim at what he see as nepotism in Yingluck's administration.

But for now, Thailand's highly political army has shown no signs of moving against Yingluck.

AVOIDING A BACKLASH

The new cabinet line-up leaves Finance Minister Kittirat Na Ranong, a non-party financial market technocrat, in place despite an outcry over his admission in August that he told "white lies" about export prospects.

The reshuffle - Yingluck's third since she came to power 15 months ago - comes ahead of a censure debate next month that the opposition says will target her handling of floods in 2011 and a widely criticized rice intervention scheme.

Thaksin loyalists in the cabinet include Varathep Rattanakorn, a former deputy finance minister who has been given a post in the prime minister's office, and Education Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana, a former Thaksin spokesman.

Others with close ties to Thaksin include Energy Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal, a veteran of the Thai Rak Thai party who is said to be close to Thaksin's other sister, Yaowapha Wongsawat.

Thaksin's brother-in-law, Priewpan Damapong, until recently national police chief, is widely expected to be given some sort of government position soon.

Analysts say the Shinawatras are surrounding themselves with seasoned political allies to help ensure the ruling party's longevity and prepare for Thaksin's return.

The placements are not just in the government.

The new Bangkok Metropolitan Police Chief is Khamronwit Thoopkrachang. In his office is a picture of himself beside former policeman Thaksin with the words: "I would not be where I am today without you, older brother".

Thaksin's nephew, Sarawut Shinawatra, has been promoted to the post of Army Commander in Bangkok's Don Muang district.

But the Shinawatras have largely left the military untouched in an unspoken truce that has allowed the other changes to go ahead, analysts say.

"If they go too far, with a systematic promotion and replacement of his opponents, then a backlash like in 2006 is possible," said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political analyst at Chulalongkorn University, referring to Thaksin's ouster in a coup.

(AP) ? Ukrainians are electing a parliament on Sunday in a crucial vote tainted by the jailing of top opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko and fears of election fraud.

With the charismatic former premier serving a seven-year sentence on abuse of office charges and the opposition split into two parties, President Viktor Yanukovych's Party of Regions is expected to retain its parliamentary majority.

The West is paying close attention to the conduct of the vote in the strategic ex-Soviet state, which lies between Russia and the expanding European Union and is responsible for transporting energy supplies to many EU countries.

A strong showing by the Party of Regions will cement Yanukovych's grip on power and likely turn Ukraine further away from the West. Ukraine's relations with the U.S. and the European Union have soured over the jailing of Tymoshenko, pushing Brussels to shelve a long-awaited partnership deal with Kiev. If the West turns a cold shoulder on Ukraine, Moscow is likely to court Kiev to create a greater economic and political alliance.

The pro-Western opposition groups hope to gain enough parliament seats to challenge Yanukovych's power and undo what they call his undemocratic and harmful policies, such as the jailing of Tymoshenko and her top allies, the concentration of power in the hands of the president, the upgrading of the status of the Russian language, which some believe poses a threat to the Ukrainian tongue, waning press freedoms, a deteriorating business climate and growing corruption.

Dmitry Kovalenko, a 50-year-old entrepreneur in Kiev said he voted for Tymoshenko's Fatherland party in hopes of ending Yanukovych's monopoly on power.

"I am against repression," Kovalenko said after casting his ballot in a polling station in central Kiev. "It's easy to win when your opponents are in jail."

But the opposition has been weakened with Tymoshenko, the 51-year-old heroine of the 2004 Orange Revolution that had ousted Yanukovych from power, in jail. Tymoshenko's Fatherland party is running neck-to-neck with another pro-Western group, the Udar (Punch) party led by world boxing champion Vitali Klitschko.

Klitschko's party has gained popularity in recent months, capitalizing on voter disappointment with both Yanukovych and Tymoshenko's years in power, which were marked by a slow pace of reforms and constant bickering in the Orange camp.

"We've tasted both the orange and the blue and life hasn't changed for the better," said Zhanna Holovko, a 43-year-old high school teacher in Keiv referring to the campaign colors of the Orange revolution team and Yanukovych's party. "I am voting for a third force that I can trust," Holovko said after voting for Klitschko's group.

The opposition's failure to form a strong alliance has played into the hands of Yanukovych.

And while Tymoshenko's and Klitschko's parties are expected to make a strong showing in elections by party lists, half of the 450 seats in the Verkhovna Rada will be allocated to the winners of individual races where the Party of Regions are stronger. Yanukovych has centered his party's campaign on bringing stability after years of infighting in the Orange camp and relative economic recovery after the global financial crisis, which hit Ukraine severely.

"Stability, stability, stability is what Ukraine needs," said Olexiy Nalivaichenko, 35, a civil servant in Kiev, who voted for Yanukovych's party. "We want to feel confident and secure about tomorrow."

Also expected to get into parliament is the Communist party, which is expected to side with Yanukovych's lawmakers. Another party that could pass the 5 percent threshold is the nationalist Svoboda (Freedom), a staunch government critic infamous for xenophobic and anti-Semitic statements.

Besides Tymoshenko's jailing, which already raises big questions about the fairness of the vote, preliminary reports by international observers have identified numerous other problems during the election campaign. They include the use of state funds, bureaucracy and facilities by the ruling party in support of their candidates, media coverage on television tilted toward the Party of Regions, reports of intimidation of opposition candidates and the opposition's fears of ballot stuffing and other vote fraud.

Time Warner Cable cuts first major Lakers deal

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Time Warner Cable Inc. says it has reached its first major agreements to receive payment for carriage of two new channels carrying Lakers basketball games.

The company said Friday it had signed up Charter Communications Inc., which has around 290,000 subscribers in the Los Angeles area. Time Warner Cable also said it had agreed to terms with Verizon Communications Inc., whose subscriber numbers in the region were not immediately clear.

The first regular-season game to be carried on the channels is Wednesday night at Portland. The Lakers' season opener is at home against the Mavericks on Tuesday in a game to be broadcast on TNT.

Time Warner Cable bought the regional TV rights to Lakers games last year for an estimated $3 billion over 20 years, in a deal that also included games of pro soccer's LA Galaxy and the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks. It must sign deals with other TV distributors to help offset costs.

Earlier this month, Time Warner signed up partner Bright House Networks, which only has a few thousand subscribers in Bakersfield.

Time Warner Cable has about 1.7 million customers in the region, but there are more than 2 million other pay TV subscribers, including customers of DirecTV and Dish Network Corp., who might lose access to games if their providers don't reach a deal to carry the channels.

There are also nearly 700,000 TV households in the area that get their signals for free via antenna that will lose access to the Lakers' away games this year unless they opt to pay for TV. Lakers away games used to be broadcast over the airwaves for free by KCAL, a CBS Corp. TV station.

Hurricane Sandy slogs toward U.S., 41 killed in Caribbean

MIAMI (Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy, a late-season Atlantic cyclone that threatens to be one of the worst storms to hit the U.S. Northeast in decades, slogged slowly northward on Friday after killing at least 41 people in the Caribbean.

Forecasters said wind damage, widespread and extended power outages and coastal and inland flooding were anticipated across a broad swath of the densely populated U.S. East Coast when Sandy comes ashore early next week.

"We're expecting a large, large storm. The circulation of this storm as it approaches the coast could cover about the eastern third of the United States," said Louis Uccellini, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Centers for Environmental Prediction.

He stopped short of calling Sandy possibly the worst storm to hit the U.S. Northeast in 100 years, as some weather watchers were doing, but said Sandy was shaping up to go down as a storm of "historic" proportions.

The late-season hybrid storm has been dubbed "Frankenstorm" by some weather watchers because it will combine elements of a tropical cyclone and a winter storm. Forecast models show it will have all of the ingredients to morph into a massive and potentially catastrophic "super storm."

On its current projected track, government forecasters said, Sandy could make landfall on Monday night or Tuesday in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York or southern New England.

In New York City, the global financial hub, officials were considering closing down mass transit before the storm hits.

ROMNEY, BIDEN CANCEL TRIPS

Coming in the final weeks before the U.S. presidential election on November 6, the storm could throw last-minute campaign travel plans into chaos.

An aide to Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney said he had canceled a campaign event scheduled for Sunday night in Virginia Beach, Virginia. President Barack Obama's re-election campaign announced that Vice President Joe Biden had also canceled a trip to Virginia Beach scheduled for Saturday.

The Democratic incumbent was traveling to New Hampshire on Saturday, and on Monday was due to visit Youngstown, Ohio, and Orlando, Florida.

Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said he and the head of the U.S. National Hurricane Center had briefed the president on preparations for the storm on Friday morning.

"His direction to us again, as always, is to make sure we are prepared to support the states and the governors dependent upon the impacts of the storm," Fugate told reporters.

Much of Florida's northeast coast was under a tropical storm warning on Friday, and storm watches extended up the coast through North Carolina. Winds and rains generated by Sandy were being felt across much of Florida, with schools closed and air travel snarled in many areas.

Sandy weakened to a Category 1 storm as it tore though sparsely populated low-lying southeastern islands in the Bahamas late Thursday, knocking out power and blowing rooftops off some homes.

Some further weakening was forecast over the next two days, but the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said hurricane- or tropical-force winds were still likely by the time Sandy hits the U.S. coast.

Sandy's driving rains and heavy winds were blamed for 41 deaths in the Caribbean, where landslides and flash floods were triggered by the cyclone.

The Cuban government said Sandy killed 11 people when it tore across the island on Thursday. The storm took at least 26 other lives in deeply impoverished Haiti and four people were killed in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and the Bahamas.

The Haitian dead included a family of five in Grand-Goave, west of the capital Port-au-Prince, killed in a landslide that destroyed their home, authorities said.

The Cuban fatalities were unusual for the communist-ruled country that has long prided itself on protecting its people from storms by ordering mass evacuations.

The National Hurricane Center said Sandy was about 420 miles south-southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, late on Friday afternoon, packing top sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120 km per hour).

LUNAR TIDE

Sandy was forecast to remain a Category 1 hurricane as it completed it passage over the Bahamas late on Friday, sending swirling rains and winds across areas including Florida.

It was moving slowly, however, making its final trek across the central and northwest corner of the Bahamas islands at 7 mph.

Many forecasters are warning that Sandy could be more destructive than last year's Hurricane Irene, which caused billions of dollars in damage as it battered the U.S. Northeast.

Uccellini said he was reluctant to make comparisons with other storms. But he warned that a full moon on Sunday added to Sandy's potential for destruction when it comes ashore in the United States.

"The lunar tide peaks two days after the full moon, and that's Monday-Tuesday, which is exactly when the storm will be impacting the coastal areas," he said. "We'll have heavy rains and inland river flooding is a real potential here."

Todd Kimberlain said Sandy was somewhat unique because of its integration with the polar trough over the United States.

"We went through this same sort of thing back about 20 years ago around Halloween in 1991 with the 'Perfect Storm,'" Kimberlain said.

That storm, featured in a book and movie of that name, combined several different storm systems to ravage the East Coast.

A forecast report on Friday from AccuWeather.com predicted "a catastrophic storm" for the Middle Atlantic and Northeast.

"It will not be a purely tropical system, with a core of powerful winds near the center, but rather more like a Nor'Easter, with strong winds over a larger area," the report said.

A circus comes to Gaza _ minus lions and ladies

(AP) ? The circus came to Gaza on Friday, accompanied by blaring music, juggling clowns and fire blowers ? but getting it there required its own high-wire act.

No women performers were included for fear of offending conservative Palestinians and the Gaza Strip's militant Hamas rulers, and the circus' lone lion and tiger were left behind because of the high cost of transporting them legally into Gaza.

The Egyptian National Circus put on its first show of a month-long visit to the impoverished coastal territory on Friday, a sign of warmer relations between Hamas and post-revolution Egypt, which is governed by the Islamic group's ideological parent, the Muslim Brotherhood.

Although it's not state-sponsored, the Egyptian circus could only come because the country's government loosened restrictions on the flow of passengers in and out of Gaza. More foreigners now enter Gaza, including the ruler of the resource-rich Gulf state Qatar earlier this week.

Once in Gaza, the Egyptians' faced an unusual situation ? most Palestinians here don't know what a circus is.

"I think it's going to be really surprising for most people," said Riwa Awwad, 19, ahead of the opening night.

"Gazans are famous for not liking anything and I think they'll do the impossible to entertain us," said Awwad, who came with her extended family to the fairground on Friday.

In an ironic twist, the cheery circus with its flashing lights was held on the grounds of a notorious security prison that was destroyed during an Israeli offensive four years ago.

For the Gazans fortunate enough to see the opening show, it was a welcome relief from conflict and despair. The fairgrounds were packed with excited children in new cloths, women in glittery headscarves, others in black face veils, and men in suits and freshly pressed shirts. Families snacked on pumpkin seeds.

They hollered and cheered as a tight-rope walker wiggled his hips and belly-danced on a thread suspended above the ground. A performer hurled silver knives around volunteers. A red-clad fire blower shot whooshing, yellow licks of flame out of his mouth. Two clowns dressed in yellow-and-blue bumbled and fumbled as they tried to juggle, delighting children.

It took months to arrange the visit to the impoverished territory, where 1.6 million people live in a 25 mile-long sliver wedged between Israel and Egypt and face a punishing blockade imposed after Hamas seized control in 2007.

Aside from a circus' brief visit in the 1990s, there's never been anything like it since Israel captured the strip from Egypt in 1967. Israeli forces and settlers withdrew in 2005.

Businessman Mohammed Faris said he remembered seeing the circus under Egyptian rule in the 1950s, when Gaza was still a liberal place with casinos and bars. He said he recalled as a child seeing men walking on nails and female acrobats flying across stage.

"It was men and women - pretty women," he said.

Not this time around.

Organizer Mohammed Silmi said female performers had to stay behind because the circus was worried that leaping ladies in tights would offend Gazans.

He said Hamas didn't explicitly ban women but he was asked to abide by Gaza's "traditions" when he petitioned to get the circus to come.

In practice, the circus wiggled a little around the no-women rule. At one point a man in drag, sporting a brown wig and red dress, sang and danced with Bunduk the clown.

After Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007, Israel and Egypt imposed a blockade that aimed to weaken the militants who seek Israel's destruction.

Under international pressure, it was loosened after Israel raided a blockade-defying boat and killing nine Turkish activists aboard in 2009. Key restrictions still remain on exports and importing raw materials.

All the circus equipment came through the Rafah border crossing, but expensive fees and cumbersome paperwork kept the circus from bringing lions, tigers and horses across the border.

Gaza's makeshift zoos and other merchants often bypass that problem by hauling animals through smuggling tunnels linking the territory to Egypt. In one famous scene captured on film, Gazans used a crane to lift a camel over the border fence as the animal twitched in the air in agony.

Animal welfare aside, Gaza's main zoo recently turned to improvised taxidermy to keep its deceased animals on exhibit.

The area also continues to be violent. As circus technicians were setting up their tent earlier this week, Palestinian militants were fighting Israeli forces in tit-for-tat rounds of rocket fire and retaliatory airstrikes.

Egyptian technician Khalil Gomaa, 55, jolted upon every crashing boom. He told his children he was in Jordan so they wouldn't be worried. "But I'm worried," he said.

But the circus' biggest challenge may be packing the 1,000-seater tent for the month-long visit.

A series of Palestinians interviewed didn't know what a circus was, and the tickets ? ranging from $5-$10 seats ? are too expensive for most of Gaza's traditionally large families.

Some 40 percent of Gazans live on less than $2 a day, a third are unemployed and most need U.N. donated food.

They include the mother of eight, Sabrine Baoud, and her unemployed husband. After the circus was explained to her, Baoud, 35, said she was glad her children didn't know anything about it.

They'd never be able to afford to go.

The Eid holiday: What does it celebrate?

While the Eid festival following Ramadan is better know, Eid al-Adha is more significant to the Muslim calendar.

By Ariel Zirulnick,?Staff writer / October 26, 2012

The Syrian cease-fire pegged to the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha has put the annual observance in the spotlight, bringing it to non-Muslims attention for reasons that have nothing to do with the holiday. But the ?Feast of the Sacrifice? is one of the most important holidays on the Muslim calendar, actually trumping the better known festival holiday Eid al-Fitr in importance.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated at the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, or hajj, which each Muslim is supposed to undertake once in his or her life. It is welcomed at daybreak on the first day with a communal prayer and lasts three days.

The holiday commemorates the day when Abraham was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his son, Ishmael. Abraham?s willingness to obey led Allah to permit him to sacrifice a ram in his son?s stead. (In the Judeo-Christian recounting, it is Abraham?s other son, Isaac, who is almost sacrificed.)

Eid al-Adha is celebrated with the sacrifice of an animal, part of which is kept for the family for a feast, part of which is distributed to friends and the poor. It also includes the distribution of gifts and sweets, visits with family, and, for those not in Mecca for the hajj, visits to local mosques and relatives? graves. ?
Today, much like Christmas, Eid al-Adha is also often marked in commercial ways. Gulf News reports that Dubai shopping malls are holding 24-hour ?shopping extravaganzas? in honor of the festival holiday.

Build Your Teen's Self-Esteem Through a Volunteer Program | We ...

For all the attention paid to making sure high school students collect impressive experiences that can decorate their college applications, not nearly as much attention is paid to simply enriching their lives through the opportunities available to them. So when the subject of volunteering comes up, it?s far more often referenced as something that will make your college application shine.

But there?s much more to volunteering than the line it occupies on a resume or application. Volunteering has significant mental and emotional health benefits for its participants. High schoolers in particular can see their self-esteem get a boost from their time spent volunteering.

There are a variety of summer volunteer programs for high school students that can help you or your children connect with volunteer opportunities that would be a good fit. By getting involved, teens can collect rewarding experiences that may never fully be conveyed on a resume, but the effects on their future can be demonstrable ? and very visible.

Here are three ways volunteering can boost a high school student?s self-esteem:

1. Gain confidence and a sense of achievement

Some high school students may be out there to collect a certain number of volunteer hours, but most volunteers donate their time because they want to work for causes that they are passionate about. Being able to contribute to those areas of need can create a sense of accomplishment and achievement that is often lost in the rat race for good grades and exceptional accolades. Volunteering can be a personal experience that is emotionally gratifying while also being fun and relaxing. High school students can ride that wave of fulfillment into other parts of their life, improving their mental health at school and/or at work.

2. Feel good by doing good

Most teens have such frenzied schedules that the idea of losing even an hour is enough to rack them with anxiety. But when you?re volunteering, that donation of time is easily written off as a small cost of serving the greater good. Without the pressure to perform that is applied by so many other areas of life, teens can simply enjoy their experiences and the fruits of their labors. Desire and enthusiasm are hot commodities in volunteer work ? and in life, for that matter ? and they can breed more of the same.

3. Discover new hobbies and interests

Volunteering is a great way for teens to learn more about themselves and their interests. It?s a way that many young people discover new passions that they never may have expected. These passions could later develop into hobbies or even careers. Because volunteering forces you to look and think outside of the box, it exposes you to experiences and ideas you might not have otherwise considered. And the realization of just how many opportunities are available to you can be an invigorating experience for a high schooler.

Life may seem interminably busy when you?re 17 years old, but it?s important to slow down and take stock of the world surrounding you. With so many scholastic and extracurricular pressures, that?s often easier said than done. Experiences like volunteering often force you to be more mindful of the world and just what, exactly, you?re doing with your life. And that increased awareness is sure to inspire self-confidence in young people.

The Game Jar | My Fantastic Gaming Community

Three years ago I had just started a job working for a small health and safety consultancy in Wootton Bassett where I live. I had always been a huge fan of games, but safe to say I had no idea about the sheer scale of likeminded people who were only a tweet away. I had no idea how to get a job in the games industry ? I knew I had probably missed my chance by not studying the right subjects at college or gambling on university, but hey, this was a time where I didn?t even know community managers for developers existed. I didn?t know about things like Gamescom or Eurogamer Expo ? I had never looked beyond the titles on the shelves, satisfying myself with the escapism they brought me and thinking that this was all I needed to enjoy games. You may say I?m a late bloomer to the world of gaming. True I?m a relative virgin to the community but I?ve loved and played games since I can remember. But if the gaming community is a party, then I?ve shown up fashionably late? and the party is awesome.

It all started with something called Twitter ? this new fandangled social media thing where apparently you can stalk celebrities and find out what they do from cutting their toe nails to abusing their fellow celebs. Whilst this is loathsomely possible, it can also be used to do a great deal of good.?On signing up to Twitter I thought I?d search for any local-based tweeters that I could start following. I came across a certain Joe Dale who I happened to go to school with, albeit a few years below but knew him through my sister and the occasional ?hello? over the years. It was the start of something meaningful to me; Joe was writing for Death by Robots (now TheGameJar) at the time and I thought that sounded wicked cool. I enquired as to what he did there as it sounded like something I?d like to do and he gave me some pointers as to who to follow on Twitter and to get writing some reviews.

I quickly found that the gaming industry had a great and active presence on Twitter. I found myself following a whole host of users and engaging in conversation with people I?d never met, but regarding topics we were passionate about. I?d never had this with friends from school so Twitter became a great place for me to?critique and?discuss topics ? and people who shared that interest would see it and engage with me. Twitter, I thought, you?re onto a winner with me.

Death By Robots needed a few new writers ? Joe introduced me to Jenn and Ryan to whom I submitted a few pieces to try and showcase my fledgling writing skills. They were thankfully impressed, or I was the best of a bad bunch, so we had a Skype chat, which I found scary. How am I meant to come across to these new people? I want to impress but don?t want to look like a douche?! However, my fears were misplaced and we got on great again thanks to similar interests in games and music alike. Here I?ve met two people who six months before I probably would never have met had I not joined Twitter.

What I want to get across in this article is not my whole backstory on how I came to TheGameJar but how social media and the wider gaming community has played a huge positive role in my life. I have a great group of close friends from school but they can?t satisfy me the way my gaming community can, and I don?t mean sexually. If I went to the pub with my friends and started talking about games or some sociological and ideological aspects of gaming most of them would switch off ? it just doesn?t interest them the way it does me. Yet if I post on Twitter or write a feature for TheGameJar on why games make us happy, people respond and interact with that and there aren?t many better feelings than when people give you positive feedback and interaction. We all have an opinion that we love to air and Twitter gives us an outlet to vent our frustrations, joy, anger and happiness to people who will, in some cases, actually listen to you ? a hub of likeminded souls.

Some people are lucky enough and have the skills to pay the bills and work in the gaming industry as programmers, coders, PR, community managers (I know what they are now) and a whole host of other roles. Unfortunately there are those of us who work in the ?real? world and engage as much as time allows into our gaming community. I?ve come to appreciate the hard work and dedication required to make a successful game, be it the Assassin?s Creeds of this world or the iPhone apps of Hardlines and New Star Soccer. Twitter is the best way to engage with an audience who are after what you have.

Through TheGameJar I?ve been lucky enough to attend a few expos and meet a number of people who work within the industry. Being able to redeem the occasional review code for a new game is a great perk, but pales in comparison to the buzz I get out of my timelines and writing feedback. Being able to meet the people you interact with on a regular basis is fantastic and I hope for more opportunities in the future as we gamers are often the shy type. Hence we seek out the contact from our online peers as we often find it a struggle in person.

There?s just something about my gaming community that fills a hole. I?m checking my Tweetdeck as often as I can and get frustrated when I have to work, therefore missing a few hour?s worth of tweets ? I could have missed something big! There?s always a game or controversial topic being discussed that naturally needs my opinion whether others care to read it or not, but that?s the beauty of Twitter; you can divulge your opinion until the cows come home and more often than not someone will come back with their own opinion, sparking a heated debate than ends up with more Twitter handles in the 140 characters than actual opinionated content.

My gaming community are my followers and the people I follow on Twitter, Skype friends and Facebook friends, people who interact with my blog posts and game posts. They give me joy, laughter and at times incredulities. A few have gone on to become people I talk to every day and may even get an invite to my wedding next year (if they?re lucky/add me on Skype). This world I was unaware of only three years ago has now become the backbone to my daily life and a whole world I now can?t live without.

Former UFC fighter Shamar Bailey injured fighting a fire

Shamar Bailey was a part of the thirteenth season of "The Ultimate Fighter," fought twice in the Octagon, and also fought for Strikeforce and Bellator. While he's still fighting, he also works as a firefighter in Indianapolis and was injured Monday when working on a fire that was the work of an arsonist.

Bailey talked about the fire to Bloody Elbow, and said his injuries were routine.

We had a big fire yesterday involving a three story house. It flashed over on us while we were cutting holes in the roof. While we were cutting the holes, there was an explosion. The fire and smoke heated up to a release point and exploded in our faces. Fortunately, we had our masks on, but I did get some exposure in my chest area and on my wrists, and that's where I'm burnt. We went ahead with business and put the fire out, and I actually didn't realize until afterwards that I had been burned.

The house was considered a total loss, and the Indianapolis Fire Department is investigating the arson. Bailey has a fight scheduled against Gideon Ray in December, and doesn't think the second-degree burns he sustained will keep him from fighting.

Bailey isn't the only fighter who moonlights as a firefighter. Retired UFC fighter Chris Lytle worked as a firefighter in Indianapolis throughout his long MMA career, and Eddie Wineland works as a firefighter, as well.
