1st ODI: Centurion Nasir Jamshed leads Pakistan to 6 wickets victory over India

CHENNAI: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's heroic unbeaten century under pressure went in vain as archrivals Pakistan held their nerve to clinch the first one-day international with a comfortable six-wicket victory in a low-scoring contest on Sunday.

Scorecard | Match in Pics

India posted 227 for six after recovering from a precarious 29 for five one stage but that turned out to be insufficient for the Pakistanis who rode on Nasir Jamshed's unbeaten century to overhaul the target with 11 balls to spare and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Dhoni played a captain's knock with an unbeaten 113, his 8th ODI century, to script a brilliant Indian recovery after left-arm pacer Junaid Khan (4/43) exploited the overcast conditions to rip through the top-order and leave the hosts gasping for breath within the first 10 overs.

The Indian captain found an able ally in Suresh Raina (43) first and then Ravichandran Ashwin (31 not out) to take the score beyond the 200-run mark which looked doubtful at one stage following the top-order collapse.

Dhoni and Ashwin put on a record seventh wicket partnership of 121 runs but the Indian captain's superlative knock off 125 balls lost much of its value as the Pakistani batsmen went about the task of chasing down the target without taking too many risks.

Younis Khan (58) and Shoaib Malik (34 not out) were the other notable performers for Pakistan.

The Pakistani innings started on a disastrous note as ODI debutant Bhuvneshwar Kumar produced a beauty to get rid of Mohammed Hafeez with the very first delivery of the Pakistan innings.

The ball came back sharply after pitching as Hafeez didn't offer a stroke only to find his off-stump knocked back.

The youngster got rid of Azhar Ali a few overs later to reduce the visitors to 21 for two. But the experienced Younis Khan and Nasir steadied the Pakistan innings with a solid 112-run third wicket partnership.

Both Jamshed and Younis benefitted due to some horrendous decisions given by the Indian umpire S Ravi. Jamshed was lucky to get a reprieve on 24 when an inside edge was caught by Virender Sehwag in first slip off Ashwin but Ravi turned down the appeal.

Ravi also negated a plumb leg before decision against Younis when the right-hander missed a delivery from Ashwin in his bid to play the sweep shot.

Younis returned to the pavilion when Ashwin latched on to a low catch off Ashok Dinda, a decision which was referred to the TV umpire by on-field umpire Billy Bowden. But by that time, the visitors were already in a good position and just needed to bat sensibly to reach the target.

Jamshed, who grew in confidence as the innings wore on, was dropped by Yuvraj Singh when on 68 off Dinda much to the disappointment of a sizeable holiday crowd at the Chepauk.

Just when Pakistan seemed to be cruising along comfortably, Ishant Sharma enlivened the proceedings to some extent by getting rid of captain Misbah-ul-Haq (16) with a slower ball which knocked down the off stump.

It was Malik, who hit the winning runs with a pull towards deep mid-wicket boundary off the first ball of the penultimate over.

Earlier, put into bat, India plunged into trouble straightaway with Gautam Gambhir (8), Virender Sehwag (4), Virat Kohli (0), Yuvraj Singh (2) and Rohit Sharma (4) returning to the pavilion in quick succession as Junaid got the ball to swing under overcast conditions.

The Pakistani pacers took advantage of the moisture on the track and troubled the top-order batsmen with the new ball. Once the ball got a little older, Dhoni and Raina applied themselves and started rebuilding the Indian innings.

The two teams will now travel to Kolkata for the second ODI to be held on January 3 while the third and final match will be staged at the Ferozeshah stadium in New Delhi on January 6.

Pacer Junaid had justified his captain Misbah-ul-Haq's decision to bowl first in damp conditions with struggling opener Sehwag becoming Junaid's first victim.

The Delhi batsman, considered a game-changer for his ability to take the attack to the opposition, swung it Pakistan's way after slogging for 11 balls to get four runs.

Sehwag was castled by a Junaid delivery that came in a shade after pitching.

The big four of the Indian batting order were all bowled, three of them by Junaid, who seemed unplayable getting the ball to move appreciably both in the air and off the pitch.

The proverbial promising batsman of the side, Rohit added another one to his growing list of failures, becoming Junaid's fourth victim after scratching around for 14 deliveries for his four runs.

Rohit's last six ODI innings now read a disappointing 4, 4, 4, 0, 0 and 5. In fact, the top five managed to pull off just two fours for the team.

At 29/5 in a little less than 10 overs, India were staring firmly down the barrel before Raina and Dhoni came together to repair the innings slowly and steadily.

The duo cautiously added 73 runs for the sixth wicket and defied Pakistani bowlers for a good 23 overs.

Dhoni got a life on 16 when in the 26th over rival skipper Misbah-ul Haq dropped him at midwicket of Mohammed Hafeez's bowling and the Indian, who smashed seven fours and three sixes, made it count.

Dhoni was suffering from dehydration and also battled cramps towards the end of India innings.

Meanwhile, Raina's patient innings came to an end when he lost his leg stump to Hafeez. But Dhoni was unfazed and, in fact, accelerated from that point, reaching his fifty with a whip over midwicket boundary off Umar Gul.

For a man not exactly known for solid technique, Dhoni was the lone Indian batsman to smash spin ace Saeed Ajmal for a six. A new ball had to be sought to replace the one which went out of the ground.

He also brought up his hundred in style, hoicking Irfan over cover in the 49th over, which produced 21 runs with Dhoni doing most of the scoring. For Pakistan, Junaid was the most successful bowler, grabbing 4/43 in his nine overs.

This was the first match played under the new ICC rules. Under these rules, one new ball was used at each end, bowlers were allowed two bouncers an over, there was no batting Power Play, the bowling Power Play was completed before the 40th over, and at no stage in the innings more than four fielders were allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

Family Dentist South Hadley MA on Peridontal Disease Treatment ...

DentistSouthHadleyMA.com Family Dentist South Hadley MA Dr. Douglas Leigh, speaks about periodontal disease. A periodontal disease attacks the gums and can vary from simple gum inflammation to serious diseases that can result in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost. Our mouths are full of bacteria. These bacteria constantly form a sticky, colorless plaque on teeth. Brushing and flossing can help get rid of plaque. Periodontal disease is divided is two stages. Gingivitis is bacteria caused by inflammation of the gums. Periodontitis occurs when gingivitis is not treated. Gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces called ?pockets? that become infected. The body?s immune system fights the bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. Natural response to infection starts to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If not treated, the bones, gums and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed. Neighbors help out in Tenn. tornado recovery

Neighbors help out in Tenn. tornado recovery
December 30, 2012 09:03 EST

HARRISON, Tenn. (AP) -- The communities of Harrison and Ooltewah are still scarred with uprooted, twisted trees and homes under construction after a March 2 tornado, but neighbors are helping each other on the path to recovery.

The EF3 tornado destroyed 82 homes and damaged 262 more. But even as bulldozers and roofers repair the damage, not everyone has been able to recover as quickly, The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports (http://bit.ly/V55SE7 ).

Carl Evett lost his small uninsured home in the tornado, and while many insured homeowners have been able to rebuild, he's been struggling.

So during this holiday season, his neighbors partnered with volunteers from the Bayside Baptist Church to use donated materials and the money he received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to build a new home.

Tips For The Advantages Offered With Car Finance Lease UK ...

by JoeyTWatson

Car leasing involves paying for a vehicle over a specified time period. This rental process allows one to select a particular automobile for between 24 to 48 months providing many benefits over ownership. With the option of a car finance lease UK residents are provided numerous options and opportunities.

The costs are based on the residual value of an automobile, which means that you are paying for its value at the end of a lease and including depreciation. You will not be responsible for the retail price of the vehicle in terms of monthly repayments. The major benefit lies in the fact that lower costs can be expected.

Be sure to discuss the terms of the contract and whether you have the option to lease a new vehicle or purchase the automobile being currently leased. Consider this financing option in comparison to a loan with high interest rates. The repayments for the month will also be lower as it will not be leased at retail value.

If you are looking for a vehicle on a budget, this option can prove most effective. Depreciation will be included in the total so you will not have to be concerned with the drastic loss of asset value. Depending on the terms and conditions, you will not be required to put a large deposit in place.

With the rate at which newer vehicles depreciate today, leasing allows one to drive the latest cars and upgrade according to the contract. This way you will not have to fork out large expenses attributed to depreciation. The vehicle leased will also be covered by a manufacturers warranty for the specified period.

A maintenance package can be added covering various components. With the option of a car finance lease UK drivers may save money and access some of the latest models in industry. Consider the fact that you will not have to sell the vehicle or pay exorbitant interest rates serving as more convenient.

Paul Krugman: Here's The Dirty Secret About Economic Growth

The New York Times:

The great bulk of the economic commentary you read in the papers is focused on the short run: the effects of the "fiscal cliff" on U.S. recovery, the stresses on the euro, Japan's latest attempt to break out of deflation. This focus is understandable, since one global depression can ruin your whole day. But our current travails will eventually end. What do we know about the prospects for long-run prosperity?

A model-free way to characterize polymodal ion channel gating

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Two studies in The Journal of General Physiology (JGP) help pave the way for a "shortcut" model-free approach to studying activation of "polymodal" ion channels -- channels that open in response to multiple stimuli. Transmembrane ion channels respond to various physiological stimuli to regulate numerous cellular functions.

Different classes of channels respond to different types of stimuli; some channels, for instance, respond to changes in membrane potential whereas others are activated by ligand binding. Polymodal channels integrate different cellular signals, enabling them to mediate a more precise and flexible physiological response. Understanding the mechanisms involved in polymodal channel activation has been a challenge, however, in part because of the complexity of the models required.

Now, two studies in the January issue of JGP use straightforward thermodynamically rigorous analysis to parse the free energy of polymodal voltage- and ligand-dependent ion channels. In one study, University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers Sandipan Chowdhury and Baron Chanda examine the BK channel -- a channel activated by both changes in membrane potential and calcium binding to an intracellular domain. In the second study, Daniel Sigg (dPET Professional Services) explores gating of polymodal ion channels in general. Specifically, the authors show how to use G-V (conductance-voltage), Q-V (charge-voltage) and conductance vs. ligand concentration measurements to extract the free energies of interaction of the modules of a polymodal channel that respond to these distinct modalities

This new approach opens the door for a model-independent way to studying ion channel gating, which could be useful both for constraining future atomic-scale models of channel gating, and in understanding the disruptions that result from disease causing genetic mutations.

What's In Your 2013 SEO Playbook?

2013 SEO PlaybookI?ve thought about writing my 2013 SEO game plan since I hit the submit button for last year?s version. The problem is, since when my review of 2012 came out last month, I?ve read numerous SEO in 2013 articles, and many of them are quite good or complete.

I have to give special kudos to Paul Bruemmer?s Which Top SEO Tactics Will You Focus On In 2013? That is a tough act to follow. I don?t want to be redundant, so I am taking a different tact this year. While there is no way to make this wholly unique, here?s what?s on my mind.

Change How You Think About Search Engines

Search engine optimizers tend to think in terms of earning top rankings and placements. Perish any thought we?re manipulating Google or Bing, not to mention YouTube, App stores and directories, maps and review sites, or all those other search results out there. Yet, the cold truth persists, SEOs work to influence search engine results and we want them to reward our work by behaving a certain way.

This year something changed, something every SEO must confront during 2013. Search engines became both bold and adept at doing whatever they want to do? or don?t want to do. They will reduce organic screen space. They will change organic results to paid results. They will favor brand popularity over quality. They will reserve analytics data for paying advertisers. The list of changes (and complaints by SEOs) continues to grow.

Up to 2011, the test of a good SEO was wrangling search engines into behaving the way we wanted them to. During the last two years, it all ended. The vision search engines endorse, and their ability to enforce and execute that vision, grew dramatically closer. And, while the search engines? algorithms evolved, so did their internal analytics, which means they can make more data-driven decisions.

Google and Bing are still far from perfection, and we will continue to see their mistakes, especially as they roll out new features and products. But, they aren?t pushovers anymore, not even for the most talented search optimizers.

Not being pushovers does not make them bullies. Get frustrated. Challenge questionable changes. Fight for more transparency and data access. Become an activist. But, don?t condemn the search engines. Without them, we would not have such tremendous opportunities. Understand the search engines? goals, then use that knowledge to achieve your own business goals. Symbiosis is the mindset to adopt for 2013.

Go Enterprise

When we think of enterprise SEO, large sites with thousands of pages come to mind. Even if your site has only a few dozen or a few hundred pages, you need to embrace an enterprise approach. Large websites have long development cycles. They have to make smart decisions upfront because they have to live with them for a long time.

Get your navigation, internal linking, site performance, and page templates set-up and optimized now, then forget about them. Optimize the content you already have, then move on. If you?re constantly tweaking or changing these things, ask yourself whether you are creating impactful change or are frustrated because nothing else seems to be working?

Focus on new content. Create it. Evangelize it. Teach. If you?re not writing and publishing content yourself, provide topic and keyword guidance to those who do. Train your copywriters to optimize as they compose. Arrange to SEO review everything before it gets published.

This goes hand in hand with my next point.

Become An Online Brand

Search engines make it easy for major brands to rank well across lots of queries. They seem to give Fortune 1,000 and Global 2,000 companies leeway and forgiveness that small and mid-sized businesses do not enjoy. Right? Then, why do hundreds of lesser companies seem to enjoy the brand bump? Because they dominate their niches with great content and communication.

Content is king. This was the mantra at the beginning of SEO, and it is still true today. The difference is your content must perform triple duty.

  • Keyword targeted and optimized
  • Link worthy
  • Social media worthy

Adding frequent, fresh content creates additional opportunities to rank well, but only if that content enjoys the necessary search engine authority, from either direct offsite links or internal links. This doesn?t mean everything you publish has to be link or social worthy, but you need successes and the occasional home run. It?s better to split time between creating content and promoting it than to keep churning our page after page.

Keyword Targeted & Optimized Pages

When it comes to SEO, if a page is not optimized for queries people search for, even the longest of long tails, it really isn?t optimized. Use keyword-research-generated ideas for fresh content and run keyword research on your ideas. It can go both ways.

Keep in mind, not every single page has to be keyword targeted. I contend you can always find one or two; but, if you have a great piece of content that you cannot match to any keyword, publish it and promote it. Every link adds to domain strength.

Link Worthy Content

Strive to create content that is so awesome other websites will be compelled to link to it. Make it interesting. Make it high quality. Create linkbait.

Did I write create linkbait? Linkbait has become an ugly term. Don?t buy into it. Read what Google?s Matt Cutts says:

Linkbaiting sounds like a bad thing, but especially if it?s interesting information or fun, it doesn?t have to have negative connotations. I hereby claim that content can be both white-hat and yet still be wonderful ?bait? for links.

Matt Cutts ? http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/seo-advice-linkbait-and-linkbaiting/

Linkbait strategies are approaches to writing content that?s psychologically primed to attract links. Let?s trash the negative connotations and bring back linkbait in 2013. If you want to learn more about linkbait, read The Link Baiting Playbook: Hooks Revisited by Todd Malicoat.

Social Media Worthy Content

Can you summarize your content in 100 characters plus a shortened link and make it compelling enough for people to click? In a nutshell, this is what social-media-worthy means. Please don?t equate social-media-worthy with popular. If George Takei and I made the same post on Facebook at the same time, I might get a dozen likes while Mr. Takei would get anywhere from 10,000 to 80,000 likes. Creating social media worthy content and posts is only the first part.

Social media for SEO must be accompanied by audience development, especially when you don?t have enough followers to create a critical mass of activity. This is where influencer marketing, community building and lots of other social media buzzwords come in.

I?ll refrain from explaining the flywheel analogy and just return to what I wrote earlier; take time to promote the content you create. Also, take time to participate, build relationships, promote others, and reciprocate. If you are doing social media for SEO, this is a good place to spend a chunk of your time.

Social Media For SEO

Do not confuse social media for SEO with social media for conversions. They can overlap, yes, but often they don?t. You want to identify and foster an audience that will follow, like, share, retweet, etc. If the people who make buying decisions do not congregate together online, you need to find an audience that does, one you can engage. This is often the case in B2B. If your social media program does not create search engine ranking authority, you need a separate social media for SEO campaign.

The Third Screen

There are three types of screens: desktops, pads, and mobile. Most people use pads as second screens inside their homes or offices. Smart phones are largely used outside of the home and office when a larger screen is not handy. You can be sure the search engines are tracking what types of results users select on these different devices. As they get more and more data, I expect the results to become increasingly customized by device type. Hopefully webmaster tools will add pads as a device type this year.

Structured Data

Google?s new WYSIWYG tool for identifying structured data is an interesting development. As sites use this, it will provide the search engine with a wealth of new data it can apply to create or tweak algorithms that identify ?structure-able? data on any website, and then influence both Google?s search results and presentation. I imagine this type of application is a ways off, but it does signal Google?s interest in identifying and using structured data. If you haven?t yet, add RDFa or Schema.org markup into your pages and templates.

Les Misérables

Helena Bonham Carter, Isabelle Allen, and Sacha Baron Cohen in Les Mis?rables

Laurie Sparham

It seems only fair to begin a review of Tom Hooper?s Les Mis?rables with the disclaimer that there?s probably no cinematic adaptation of the long-running stage musical that would completely win me over. The show?s music?by Claude-Michel Sch?nberg, with the original French lyrics rendered in English by Herbert Kretzmer?just isn?t my bag. Les Mis?rables is a sung-through pop operetta with plodding four-square rhythms and long stretches of rhymed recitative. The film's libretto accomplishes its expository duty with the joyless efficiency of a French peasant: ?There was a time we killed the king/ We tried to change the world too fast/ Now we?ve got another king/ He?s no better than the last.? Every 20 minutes or so, a pop aria with a melody emerges from the sonic sludge, takes shape, then disappears again, soon to be brought back in multiple reprises. The most memorable of these songs (perhaps because it was implanted in our brains a few years ago by Britain?s Got Talent phenom Susan Boyle) is ?I Dreamed a Dream,? a pipes-testing ode to self-pity here sung by Anne Hathaway. (More on that performance, and on this movie?s unusual approach to vocal performance in general, below.)

So given that I?ve never seen a stage production of Les Mis?rables and probably wouldn?t enjoy it if I did, am I still allowed to say that this show could surely have been done better justice than this movie does it? Displacing epic action and huge musical numbers from the stage to the screen would present a tricky problem for any director, but Hooper (whose last film was the small-scaled, Oscar-winning The King?s Speech) makes such jarringly discordant choices it?s hard to figure out what he?s even trying to do. I don?t know when I?ve seen a movie with a stranger sense of visual scale than Les Mis?rables. Though many scenes take place in spectacular (often digitally augmented) locations?the halls of cathedrals, the hulls of huge ships, the barricades of 19th-century Paris?the viewer?s experience is always that of being trapped in a small room with someone singing 6 inches from your face. Hooper is in love with the low-angle close-up; his camera follows his actors around like a cocker spaniel, peering up adoringly at them and frequently launching itself in their faces. In especially heightened dramatic moments?the kind this musical strings together in a fairly unbroken crescendo?he?ll abruptly and inexplicably tilt the camera at a German Expressionist-style 45-degree angle.

There are very few performers who can pull off the trick of singing vocally demanding, hyperdramatic solos while a movie camera inspects their nostrils. Hugh Jackman, as escaped-bread-thief-turned-upstanding-citizen Jean Valjean, is among those few. A longtime stage veteran who also knows his way around a movie set, he somehow calibrates his delivery so it?s just the right size for the awkward container Hooper has put him in. The songs may still sound tuneless and bombastic to my ears, but Jackman can not only sell this kind of material, he can sell it for twice its value. Thanks to his performance, I was able to overlook the sluggish libretto long enough to tear up over Valjean?s plight.

It is a hell of a plight, after all, as originally sketched in Victor Hugo?s 1,400-page historical novel: Sentenced to 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister?s family, the stolid, pious Valjean breaks parole upon his release and goes on to become a respectable small-town mayor under an assumed name. But he?s pursued through the decades by the unstoppable Inspector Javert (here played by Russell Crowe). Along the way, Valjean adopts Cosette (played as a child by Isabelle Allen, as a young woman by Amanda Seyfried), the daughter of a doomed prostitute, Fantine (Anne Hathaway), to whom Valjean once did an unintentional injustice. Eventually, Valjean and his adopted daughter will get caught up in the chaos of the 1832 Paris rebellion, as the grown Cosette falls for a rich-kid-turned-revolutionary, Marius (Eddie Redmayne), who is in turn pined over by Eponine (Samantha Barks), a luckless innkeeper?s daughter. As Javert closes in on Valjean, the first shots of the resurgent revolution are fired and the barricades begin to rise ?

Hooper?s decision to record the actors? singing live on set (rather than having them lip-sync over their own prerecorded voices, as is the practice with most filmed musicals) lends some of the big singing scenes an unintended frisson of suspense, as the audience wonders ?Oh God, is she going to be able to hit that note?? Most of the cast?Jackman and Barks are among the exceptions?aren?t professional singers, but that in itself doesn?t necessarily constitute a problem. I can be a fan of the karaoke-style Hollywood musical that allows for differing degrees of vocal talent (Mamma Mia!, Rock of Ages).

Amanda Seyfried, who sang ABBA songs perfectly prettily in Mamma Mia!, is way out of her range as the soprano ing?nue Cosette?she ends one love duet on an alarming octave-jumping squeal. Russell Crowe has been taking a lot of heat for his less-than-exceptional singing in Les Mis?rables, but when he?s not asked to do anything too pyrotechnic, Crowe (who?s fronted a few of his own bands in Australia) can carry a tune nicely enough. A duet in which he and Jackman sing interweaving melody lines while dueling with a sword and a piece of wood does point up Crowe?s vocal shortcomings, but the bigger problem is his apparent discomfort in the role. He just seems stiff and awkward singing awful rhymed couplets in close-up; an understandable reaction, given how unpleasant the experience is on our side of the camera as well.

Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen appear intermittently as a pair of comic-relief innkeepers; their broad, lecherous slapstick is a refreshing break from the somberly upstanding proceedings, until they, too, begin to grate on our nerves. Les Mis?rables is a long, windy, thematically repetitive musical; if you didn?t understand a plot point or get to hear quite enough of a favorite song, just sit tight and it?ll come back soon.

In the ?I Dreamed a Dream? scene?the standalone set piece that will no doubt become the movie?s Oscar audition tape?Les Mis?rables tries?with mixed success, but God, does it try?to fuse raw emotional immediacy with the mechanics of virtuoso ballad-belting. Hathaway?s big song, delivered in extreme close-up in a single, very long take, is deeply felt and impeccably delivered (at least up until the last verse, when her voice constricts with emotion, trapping the sound in her throat). But Hooper?s relentless, static framing of this already maudlin number (a penniless prostitute?s swan song to an unfeeling world) gives the scene a gimmicky, showoffy quality that, for me, obscured its drama. As the camera reverently gazed through the alabaster pillars of Hathaway?s teeth, all I could think about was the proximity of her tunefully vibrating larynx. She nails the song, no doubt about it, but it?s a performance that, to me, is too much about the awesomeness of its own nailing. (And it doesn?t help that Hooper?s camera won?t stop asking is she nailing this or what?) We?re all familiar with the experience of seeing movies that cram ideas and themes down our throats. Les Mis?rables may represent the first movie to do so while also cramming us down the throats of its actors.

J.J. Abrams has once again stated that he will not directing "Star Wars: Episode VII," despite having a conversation with Kathleen Kennedy about the job early on. Earlier this year when the world exploded with "Star Wars" news, people were quick to look to Abrams as a possible directorial candidate. A known fan, Abrams had [...]

Biggest Media Departures And Arrivals Of 2012

The past year in media saw on-air talent switch networks, new shows launch, publications fold, hosts leave, leadership shake-ups and more.

The most notable departures and arrivals occurred on morning television programs across the broadcast networks. The arguably worst-handled departure was "Today" co-host Ann Curry's teary exit from the NBC morning news program. Her departure sent the cash cow into troubled waters filled with declining ratings, gossip-fueled press reports, and what some considered an image problem.

Over at ABC, co-host Robin Roberts took medical leave after being diagnosed with a rare blood and bone marrow disorder, MDS. And ABC's mid-morning show "Live! With Kelly" found its new co-host in Michael Strahan. While at CBS, former "CBS This Morning" host Erica Hill was replaced with the network's chief White House correspondent Norah O'Donnell. Hill landed at NBC's "Today" show to host the program's weekend edition.

But multiple changes occurred behind the scenes in the cable news industry as well?notably Jeff Zucker's appointment as CNN's new president. However arrivals and departures were not just limited to TV. The Newspaper, magazine, and online industries saw shake-ups as well?most notable being Newsweek publishing its final print edition just before the company moved to an all-digital format.

Take a look at the slideshow below to see the year in media arrivals, departures and shake-ups. These slides are in no particular order.

  • Ann Curry Leaves "Today"

In a messy morning TV shake-up, Ann Curry was ousted from "Today" one year she took over as co-host. She spent more than a decade on the show. The program has not yet fully recovered from the departure as many viewers site the network's treatment of Curry as the reason why they tuned away.

  • Savannah Guthrie Replaces Ann Curry At "Today"

Shortly after Curry left "Today," Savannah Guthrie was named as co-host. Guthrie joined the "Today" show's 9:00 a.m. hour one year earlier, when Curry was promoted to co-host.

  • Matt Lauer's Popularity Fades

The beloved NBC morning host's popularity dwindled after Ann Curry left "Today" as some viewers blamed Lauer for her departure. Rumors swirled in tabloids that Lauer was involved in the decision. NBC News chief Steve Capus and "Today's" then-executive producer Jim Bell repeatedly defended Lauer in the press, stressing that the he was not involved with the network's decision to replace Curry with Savannah Guthrie.

  • Willie Geist Joins "Today"

"Morning Joe" co-host and frequent "Today" guest host officially joined the NBC News morning show. He still appears on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" from 6-7:00 a.m., then crosses the plaza to host the 9:00 a.m. hour of "Today."

  • Norah O'Donnell Joins "CBS This Morning"

CBS' chief White House correspondent Norah O'Donnell joined the network's morning show over the summer.

  • Erica Hill Leaves "CBS This Morning" For "Today"

Erica Hill previously co-hosted "CBS This Morning" with Charlie Rose and Gayle King, but was replaced earlier this year. She recently joined the "Today" show's weekend edition and co-hosts the program alongside Lester Holt on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Ryan Seacrest Joins NBC News As Olympics Correspondent For "Today"

Ryan Seacrest joined NBC News just before the Olympics as a correspondent. He traveled to London with the "Today" show and appeared on the program a number of times. Seacrest, a large presence on the E! that, like NBC Universal, is owned by Comcast, was widely rumored to eventually replace Matt Lauer when he leaves "Today."

  • Executive Producer Jim Bell Leaves "Today"

After seven years as the "Today" show's executive producer, Jim Bell left the morning show for a role with NBC Sports. Bill executive produced the network's coverage of the 2012 London Olympics, which brought in record ratings and revenue, despite complaints from viewers. The departure seemed almost inevitable after "Today" experienced a year filled with declining ratings and a nasty anchor shake-up.

  • "Live! With Kelly And Michael" Launches

After Regis Philbin left "Live!" at the end of 2011, the ABC morning show announced the addition of Michael Strahan as co-host in September.

  • Robin Roberts Takes Medical Leave

"GMA" co-host Robin Roberts went on medical leave from the ABC morning show in September, after being diagnosed with the rare blood and bone marrow disorder, MDS. "GMA" has kept viewers abreast of her recovery journey.

  • George Stephanopoulos Returns To "This Week"

George Stephanopoulos returned to ABC News' Sunday public affairs show "This Week" after Christiane Amanpour left the show in December 2011. He previously anchored the morning show for eight years before Amanpour, who anchored the show for a little more than one year.

  • "Face The Nation" Extends To 1 Hour

Bob Schieffer's dream finally came true when CBS' Sunday public affairs program "Face The Nation" extended the show's length from 30 minutes to a full hour.

  • MSNBC Launches Melissa Harris-Perry's Weekend Show

Melissa Harris-Perry's new show launched shortly into 2012. Previously, Harris-Perry frequently filled-in for hosts Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell.

  • Newsweek Ends Its Print Publication

Newsweek/The Daily Beast chief Tina Brown announced that the company will be transitioning to an all-digital format in 2013 and ending its print edition in 2012.

  • Kate White Leaves Cosmopolitan

White left Cosmopolitan after 14 years.

  • Marcus Brachli Steps Down As Washington Post Editor

Brauchli stepped down as editor of the Washington Post amidst rumors that he clashed with Post publisher Katharine Weymouth. He was replaced by Boston Globe editor Marty Baron.

  • New Orleans' Time-Picayune Cuts Back Print Edition

The daily New Orleans newspaper cut back to printing only three days per week, making New Orleans the biggest city in the United States without a daily newspaper.

  • Mark Thompson Joins The New York Times

Mark Thompson began his tenure as New York Times CEO amidst scandal. News broke that the BBC program "Newsnight" scratched an investigative report outing famed British broadcaster Jimmy Savile as a serial child sex offender. Thompson was director general of the BBC when the decision was made.

  • George Entwistle Resigns From BBC

George Entwistle resigned as director general of the BBC after the Jimmy Savile scandal struck the iconic broadcasting company.

  • The Daily Folds

News Corp.'s daily iPad news publication folded almost two years after it launched. The application was hailed as a wave of the future when it debuted, but failed to resonate with a large enough audience to sustain it.

  • HuffPost Live Launches

The Huffington Post debuted its video streaming network in April 2012.

  • Jeff Zucker Joins CNN

CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton stepped down from his post at the end of 2012. Former NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker, famous for his nasty late night feud with Conan O'Brien, was named CNN's new chief.

  • CNN Launches "Early Start" And "Starting Point"

CNN's Soledad O'Brien returned to the mornings after the network debuted two new shows in 2012: "Early Start" from 5-7:00 a.m.; and "Starting Point" from 7-9:00 a.m. O'Brien hosts later show.

  • "Fox & Friends First" Launches

To compete with MSNBC's "Way Too Early" and CNN's "Early Start," Fox News debuted its early morning show, "Fox & Friends First."

  • Keith Olbermann Fired From Current TV

Keith Olbermann was fired from Current TV earlier this year. He sued the network, which then led Current TV to countersue. A nasty legal battle ensued. Olbermann was replaced by former New York governor Eliot Spitzer, who formerly co-hosted a program on CNN.

  • Dylan Ratigan Leaves MSNBC

Dylan Ratigan abruptly left MSNBC in June.

  • MSNBC Launches "The Cycle"

Dylan Ratigan's departure led MSNBC to launch "The Cycle," a news commentary show with four co-hosts.

  • "Katie" Debuts

Katie Couric's daytime television show "Katie" debuted in September to strong ratings. The newly appointed CNN chief, Jeff Zucker, served as the show's executive producer. He will step down from his post in mid-January.

  • "Anderson Live" Debuts And Gets Canceled

Anderson Cooper's daytime talk show went through a revamp after its first season, but was ultimately canceled.

LG?s latest projector system is powered by freaking lasers

8 hrs.

Until now, all consumer front projector systems?produced light using lamps or in rare cases LEDs. The new?LG HECTO FP system, on the other hand, uses lasers for illumination instead. Yes, lasers.

As LG announced on Wednesday, the new projector system uses lasers and a Texas Instruments DLP chip to form images. Typical home front projectors require around a 9 to 12 foot distance from the lens to a 100-inch screen. The LG HECTO requires only a 22-inch throw to fill the screen and can be placed on the floor or the mounted to the ceiling.

The LG HECTO Laser Projection TV will be sold as a complete system with a 100-Inch diagonal screen, a built-in ATSC TV tuner, HDMI switching and a Wi-Fi connection for streaming video.

Specifications include a rated 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 1080p resolution, 3 HDMI inputs, an optical audio input, RS-232 interface. Audio is produced by two 10W built-in speakers. The projector measures 5.7-inches high. The HECTO Laser projector does not have 3-D capability. LG has not? provided a brightness rating, a key specification. (Lasers offer the promise of very high intensity using low power.)

The screen is a fixed design and unlike theater screens its surface is black not white. LG claims the system will render a vivid, high contrast crisp image, even in lighter viewing environments.

The Laser TV supports LG's Smart TV platform and will stream movies via Netflix?and?YouTube as well as other services and?apps via its built-in Wi-Fi wireless Internet connection. The HECTO also includes LG's latest Magic Remote control.

LG claims its laser based illumination system has a lifespan of up to 25,000 hours, which is 5 times or more the life of traditional mercury-based lamps.

The LG HECTO Laser projector will be demonstrated at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show early next month. We expect pricing and availability to be announced at the show.

Oil rises on housing data, 'fiscal cliff' talks

(AP) ? The price of oil rose sharply on higher U.S. home prices and hopes of a budget deal in Washington.

U.S. benchmark crude jumped $2.06, or 2.3 percent, to $90.67 per barrel in thin post-Christmas trading Wednesday afternoon in New York.

U.S. home prices rose in most major cities in October compared with a year ago, according to a key report. The improvement is adding to economic growth, which generally boosts energy consumption and lifts prices.

President Barack Obama will return to Washington Thursday after a brief vacation to resume budget talks with Congress. Negotiations are aimed at avoiding the "fiscal cliff," the deep budget cuts and tax increases that could slow U.S. growth.

While traders and investors kept an eye on the economy and the fiscal cliff, analysts noted that light trading volume around the holidays can mean broad swings in crude prices.

"We've got a very, very thin trade," said Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates. "It doesn't really take much buying to spike it."

In London, Brent crude, used to price a various kinds of foreign oil, rose $1.83 to $110.63 per barrel.

In other energy futures trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

--Heating oil rose 4 cents to $3.03 a gallon.

--Wholesale gasoline rose 6 cents to $2.78 a gallon.

--Natural gas rose 4 cents to $3.38 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Retailers lead U.S. shares lower; yen hits two-year low

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The yen fell to a two-year low against the dollar on Wednesday as Japan's new prime minister called for weakening the currency to stimulate inflation, while U.S. stocks fell, led by declines in retailers' shares.

Sales growth at U.S. retailers was projected to have fallen short of expectations during the holiday shopping season, according to preliminary estimates from firms that track retail spending.

The S&P 500 was down 0.5 percent, with consumer discretionary stocks among the hardest hit. The Morgan Stanley Retail index <.mvr> dropped 1.9 percent.

U.S. shares were also pressured as it appeared Congress will not negotiate a deal before January 1 to avoid the "fiscal cliff," a series of $600 billion in spending cuts and tax hikes that would slow the U.S. economy sharply unless lawmakers take action.

There is concern that potential tax hikes cut into U.S. holiday spending.

"With the 'fiscal cliff' hanging over our heads, it was hard to convince people to shop, and now it's hard to convince investors that there's any reason to buy going into year-end," said Rick Fier, director of trading at Conifer Securities in New York.

A U.S. official said on Tuesday that President Barack Obama may return to Washington from his Hawaiian holiday as early as Wednesday evening to resume talks.

A series of big decisions will wait until early 2013, when tax rates are scheduled to rise for most Americans. Economists warn that the world's largest economy could fall into recession as a result unless action - even retroactive - is taken to cushion the blow of higher rates and reduced spending that has helped bolster a weak economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 36.95 points, or 0.28 percent, at 13,102.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 7.08 points, or 0.50 percent, at 1,419.58. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 19.01 points, or 0.63 percent, at 2,993.59.

U.S. stocks have held in a tight range, recovering losses sustained just after the U.S. election in November. The S&P 500 is still up about 13 percent on the year.

The dollar rose as high as 85.74 yen on trading platform EBS, the highest since September 2010, following the swearing-in of Shinzo Abe as premier and was last at 85.64. The euro rose as high as 113.40 yen, a 16-month high, up 1.4 percent. The euro was at $1.3215 against the dollar, up 0.3 percent.

Abe is calling for a mix of aggressive monetary policy easing and big fiscal spending to beat deflation and weaken the yen. He is pressuring the Bank of Japan to adopt a 2 percent inflation target that would auger for a weaker currency, threatening changes at the central bank if his wishes are not met.

"The election of Abe has had a galvanizing effect on the dollar/yen exchange rate and he has been able to accomplish more in two months of jawboning than the BoJ has... over the past several years," said Boris Schlossberg, managing director of FX strategy at BK Asset Management in New York.

Many markets remained closed following Christmas. European exchanges were largely shuttered, and Hong Kong and Australia were also closed. The MSCI All-World Index <.miwd00000pus> was down 0.2 percent on Wednesday.

U.S. single-family home prices rose in October for the ninth month in a row. The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.7 percent in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, stronger than the 0.5 percent rise forecast by economists polled by Reuters.

Ten-year U.S. Treasury notes rose 4/32 of a point in price to yield 1.762 percent.

Brent crude climbed above $110 per barrel on Wednesday, hitting a two-month high, with investors hoping for a last-minute deal to avoid a U.S. fiscal crisis. U.S. crude futures gained $2.22, or 2.5 percent, to $90.83.

YEN WEAKENS

The weaker yen has bolstered hopes for better earnings from Japanese companies and underpinned the Nikkei, which has gained about 18 percent since mid-November, when the election was scheduled. The yen has lost nearly 8 percent against the dollar in the same period.

The Nikkei <.n225> closed at a nine-month high on Wednesday, with a 1.5 percent gain. <.t/>

Minutes of the BOJ's policy-setting meeting in November, released on Wednesday, showed that some board members said the central bank must act decisively, without ruling out any policy options, if the outlook for the economy and prices worsens further.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> was little changed. Shanghai shares <.ssec> were flat, but stayed in positive territory on the year after a 2.5 percent jump on Tuesday erased 2012 losses. It is set for its first annual gain in three years.

Oppo Ulike 2 goes on sale in China with 5MP front-facing camera and free toothpicks

Oppo Ulike 2 now on sale in China, comes with 5megapixel frontfacing camera and free toothpicks

Last month, tucked in alongside news of the 1080p Find5, we got word of another, less macho Oppo phone coming to China -- the Ulike 2. This Ice Cream Sandwich-based handset went on sale today for the equivalent of $370, and you don't have to be in love with its ladyphone ways to acknowledge that it at least tries something different. Its front-facing camera rocks a full 5-megapixel resolution, putting the HTC One X+'s vanity cam to shame, while a countdown timer and a bunch of beautification filters (including face slimming and skin whitening) try to make all that extra detail work in your favor. The other specs are mediocre at best, including the 960 x 540, 4.5-inch LCD and 16GB of non-expandable storage, but Oppo is hardly alone in its views on what women want.
