Winona State men penalized by NSIC, NCAA

Winona State was penalized by the NCAA and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference on Tuesday for using an ineligible player during 19 men?s basketball games this season.

That player, guard Grant Johnson, has been ruled ineligible for the rest of the season after a violation was discovered with a misapplication of NCAA transfer rules. Johnson transferred to Winona State from Wisconsin-Parkside for the fall semester of 2011.

Johnson hasn?t played in the Warriors? last five games since the error was discovered.

NSIC Commissioner Butch Raymond said Wisconsin-Parkside never granted Johnson his release to transfer to Winona.

The Winona State athletic department failed to recognize that and Johnson was allowed to play anyway.

?The first thing a school has to do when talking to a transfer is ask the other school for permission to talk to them,? Raymond said. ?Parkside granted permission to Winona to talk to Grant. The unfortunate part was that Parkside didn?t grant him his release.
