New method of manufacturing smallest structures in electronics: Discovery could revolutionize semiconductors

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? A completely new method of manufacturing the smallest structures in electronics could make their manufacture thousands of times quicker, allowing for cheaper semiconductors. The findings have been published in the latest issue of Nature.

Instead of starting from a silicon wafer or other substrate, as is usual today, researchers have made it possible for the structures to grow from freely suspended nanoparticles of gold in a flowing gas.

Behind the discovery is Lars Samuelson, Professor of Semiconductor Physics at Lund University, Sweden, and head of the University's Nanometre Structure Consortium. He believes the technology will be ready for commercialisation in two to four years' time. A prototype for solar cells is expected to be completed in two years.

"When I first suggested the idea of getting rid of the substrate, people around me said 'you're out of your mind, Lars; that would never work'. When we tested the principle in one of our converted ovens at 400?C, the results were better than we could have dreamt of," he says.

"The basic idea was to let nanoparticles of gold serve as a substrate from which the semiconductors grow. This means that the accepted concepts really were turned upside down!"

Since then, the technology has been refined, patents have been obtained and further studies have been conducted. In the article in Nature, the researchers show how the growth can be controlled using temperature, time and the size of the gold nanoparticles.

Recently, they have also built a prototype machine with a specially built oven. Using a series of ovens, the researchers expect to be able to 'bake' the nanowires, as the structures are called, and thereby develop multiple variants, such as p-n diodes. A further advantage of the technology is avoiding the cost of expensive semiconductor wafers.

"In addition, the process is not only extremely quick, it is also continuous. Traditional manufacture of substrates is batch-based and is therefore much more time-consuming," adds Lars Samuelson.

At the moment, the researchers are working to develop a good method to capture the nanowires and make them self-assemble in an ordered manner on a specific surface. This could be glass, steel or another material suited to the purpose. The reason why no one has tested this method before, in the view of Professor Samuelson, is that today's method is so basic and obvious. Such things tend to be difficult to question.

However, the Lund researchers have a head start thanks to their parallel research based on an innovative method in the manufacture of nanowires on semiconductor wafers, known as epitaxy -- consequently, the researchers have chosen to call the new method aerotaxy. Instead of sculpting structures out of silicon or another semiconductor material, the structures are instead allowed to develop, atomic layer by atomic layer, through controlled self-organisation.

The structures are referred to as nanowires or nanorods. The breakthrough for these semiconductor structures came in 2002 and research on them is primarily carried out at Lund, Berkeley and Harvard universities.

The Lund researchers specialise in developing the physical and electrical properties of the wires, which helps create better and more energy-saving solar cells, LEDs, batteries and other electrical equipment that is now an integrated part of our lives.

Besides Lars Samuelson, the other authors of the article are: Magnus Heurlin, Martin Magnusson, David Lindgren, Martin Ek, Reine Wallenberg and Knut Deppert, all employed at Lund University, except for Martin Magnusson, who works at start-up company Sol Voltaics AB.

About semiconductors Semiconductors are materials that neither conduct electricity as well as metals, nor stop a current as effectively as insulators -- silicon and germanium are two examples. These properties may not sound attractive, but in actual fact they are excellent. The reason is that we can influence the conductive capacity of the materials, for example by introducing impurity atoms, known as doping. Materials with different types of doping can be combined to manufacture products such as transistors, solar cells or LEDs.

According to the latest numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) last week, based on the weekly earnings of full-time wage and salary workers, women now earn 82 percent as much as men ? up from 64 percent in 1980.

In recent discussions of the wage gap, a different figure ? 77 percent ? has been widely cited. That figure it also accurate, but the measure, which comes out in the spring, looks at median annual earnings for full-time year-round workers; it includes self-employed workers, which the weekly numbers exclude, and excludes seasonal workers. The figures are based on the same raw BLS data.

Most notably, in the BLS numbers released the day after Thanksgiving, the earnings of women between the ages of 25 and 34 have shot up fairly substantially over the past 32 years, from 69 percent of men's earnings in 1980 to 92 percent in 2011.

The gap still widens, though, as women age ? a sign that while many young women enter the workforce on a more equal playing field with their male counterparts, they still tend to fall behind on income as they age.

"A tremendous amount of progress has been made [on the earnings gap between men and women], in many ways more than I thought would be made," says Heidi Hartmann, president of the Institute for Women's Policy Research in Washington. The wage gap, she notes, has been cut nearly in half. "It's not good enough, but it's progress," Ms. Hartmann says.

And progress has also been made on the sex segregation of the labor market, with many previously male-dominated fields ? including law, banking, medicine, and civil service jobs like bus drivers and mail carriers ? opening up to women.

Both those trends are largely the result of women's increased entry into higher education, where female graduates have outnumbered male graduates since the mid 1980s.?

But Hartmann and others also caution that there's still a tremendous amount of work to do before women have true equality in the workforce.

A recent study from Catalyst, a nonprofit New York-based organization that promotes women in the business world, found that women in the business world are offered fewer of the "hot jobs" ? those jobs with high visibility, central to an organization's mission, that tend to lead to promotions down the road.

The Catalyst survey of top MBA grads found that men led projects with budgets more than twice the size of women's, with teams that were more than three times as large, and that posed a higher risk to the company. Men also had roles with significantly more critical responsibility ? one reason, Catalyst suggests in its analysis, for the persistent gender gap at senior levels that exists in the business world.

Another major factor in continuing inequities is the lack of parental supports, says Hartmann.

The US is one of the only countries in the world, she notes, without any guaranteed paid maternity leave ? and the only industrialized nation (the others include Lesotho, Papua New Guinea, and Swaziland).

And without the subsidized childcare costs that many nations have, many mothers have to factor child-care costs in their decision whether to return to work, and often take a leave of absence ? which they're later often penalized for when they do return to work.

And in a labor market where about half of US workers get no paid sick time at all, women are still most often the ones to skip work ? and forgo pay ? to stay home with sick children or other family members.

Still, women are slowly chipping away at the wage gap. And while paid parental leave remains elusive for many US workers, women have won a number of legal gains in the past 35 years that have helped contribute ? most notably the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 and the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (which requires most employers to provide unpaid, job-protected leave of up to 12 weeks for family or medical reasons).

Some smaller employers are exempt from even these basic protections, notes Hartmann, "but the fact that we have them is better than [nothing]."

Lenovo's quietly introduced IdeaPhone P770 at least theoretically challenges its American counterpart by cramming a 3,500mAh lithium polymer battery into a thicker 11.9mm (0.47-inch) body. That's 200mAh more than Motorola's energy champion, and enough for the company to flaunt a 29-hour talk time. That's not quite as long as Motorola's claimed 32 hours, but Lenovo has done something its American rival seemingly can't -- launch a phone with Jelly Bean. For the ¥1,699 ($273) Lenovo is asking for an off-contract model in its native China, the P770 could still be the first pick of many local phone owners on long-haul trips. It's just a shame that the lack of 4G (and Lenovo's domestic-first mobile strategy) likely means we won't see a launch in the US.

SUNDAY, Nov. 25 (HealthDay News) ? The arrival of cold weather increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, which can occur when gas furnaces, fireplaces and other heating devices don?t work properly and release the dangerous gas into homes, experts warn.

?You can?t see or smell carbon monoxide, but it can cause significant health issues and possibly kill you,? Dr. Kalpalatha Guntupalli, chief of the pulmonary critical care and sleep section at Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital and a professor at Baylor College of Medicine, said in a Harris Health System news release.

Carbon monoxide enters the bloodstream and robs the body of oxygen. Mild exposure to the gas can be easily treated, but high or prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide can be fatal.

Signs of carbon monoxide exposure include headache, dizziness, confusion, nausea or vomiting, and weakness.

Each year in the United States, about 400 people die and 4,000 are hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 20,000 people get sick enough from carbon monoxide exposure to visit an emergency department.

The elderly, children and people with chronic conditions such as heart disease, anemia and lung problems are at greatest risk, the study authors noted.

Guntupalli?s team urged everyone to get their gas heating devices checked for carbon monoxide leaks. Other potential sources of carbon monoxide include gas stoves, lanterns and wood-burning fireplaces.

In addition, Dr. Nick Hanania, director of the Asthma Clinical Research Center at Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital and an associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine, pointed out that people should never use gas-powered generators or charcoal grills indoors, or use gas stove tops and ovens to stay warm.

All homes should have carbon monoxide detectors, he added.

?You could be creating carbon monoxide and not realize it until it?s too late,? Hanania said. ?The dangers of carbon monoxide are too great to ignore.?

Metabolic protein launches sugar feast that nurtures brain tumors

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have tracked down a cancer-promoting protein's pathway into the cell nucleus and discovered how, once there, it fires up a glucose metabolism pathway on which brain tumors thrive.

They also found a vital spot along the protein's journey that can be attacked with a type of drug not yet deployed against glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and lethal form of brain cancer. Published online by Nature Cell Biology, the paper further illuminates the importance of pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) in cancer development and progression.

"PKM2 is very active during infancy, when you want rapid cell growth, and eventually it turns off. Tumor cells turn PKM2 back on -- it's overexpressed in many types of cancer," said Zhimin Lu, M.D., Ph.D., the paper's senior author and an associate professor in MD Anderson's Department of Neuro-Oncology.

Lu and colleagues showed earlier this year that PKM2 in the nucleus also activates a variety of genes involved in cell division. The latest paper shows how it triggers aerobic glycolysis, processing glucose into energy, also known as the Warburg effect, upon which many types of solid tumors rely to survive and grow.

"PKM2 must get to the nucleus to activate genes involved in cell proliferation and the Warburg effect," Lu said. "If we can keep it out of the nucleus, we can block both of those cancer-promoting pathways. PKM2 could be an Achilles' heel for cancer."

By pinpointing the complicated steps necessary for PKM2 to penetrate the nucleus, Lu and colleagues found a potentially druggable target that could keep the protein locked in the cell's cytoplasm.

MEK, ERK emerge as targets

The process begins when the epidermal growth factor connects to its receptor on the cell surface.

This leads to:

* Activation of the MEK protein, which in turn activates ERK.

* ERK sticking a phosphate group to a specific spot on PKM2.

* Phosphorylation priming PKM2 for a series of steps that culminate in its binding to the protein importin, which lives up to its name by taking PKM2 through the nuclear membrane.

Once in the nucleus, the team showed that PKM2 activates two genes crucial to aerobic glycolysis and another that splices PKM RNA to make even more PKM2.

An experiment applying several kinase-inhibiting drugs to human glioblastoma cell lines showed that only a MEK/ERK inhibitor prevented EGF-induced smuggling of PKM2 into the nucleus. ERK activation then is mandatory for PKM2 to get into the nucleus.

"MEK/ERK inhibitors have not been tried yet in glioblastoma multiforme," Lu said. Phosporylated PKM2 is a potential biomarker to identify patients who are candidates for MEK/ERK inhibitors once those drugs are developed.

MEK inhibitor blocks tumor growth

The researchers also found that the two glycolysis genes activated by PKM2, called GLUT1 and LDHA, are required for glucose consumption and conversion of pyruvate to lactate, crucial factors in the Warburg Effect. Depleting PKM2 in tumor cell lines reduced glucose consumption and lactate production.

In mice, depleting PKM2 blocked the growth of brain tumors. Re-expressing the wild type protein caused tumors to grow. However, re-expression of a PKM2 mutant protein that lost its ability to get into the nucleus failed to promote tumor formation. Experiments in human glioblastoma cell lines showed the same effect.

Injecting the MEK inhibitor selumetinib into tumors inhibited tumor growth, reduced ERK phosphorylation, PKM2 expression and lactate production in mice. In 48 human tumor samples, the team found that activity of EGFR, ERK1/2 and PKM2 were strongly correlated.

Cause of PKM2 overexpression

Lu and colleagues also published a paper in Molecular Cell that revealed a mechanism for overexpression of PKM2 in glioblastoma. They found that EGF receptor activation turns on NF-KB, which leads to a series of events culminating in PKM2 gene activation.

PKM2 levels were measured in tumor samples from 55 glioblastoma patients treated with standard of care surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. The 20 with low PKM2 expression had a median survival of 34.5 months, compared to 13.6 months for the 35 patients with high levels of PKM2.

Level of PKM2 expression in 27 low-grade astrocytomas was about half of the expression found in higher grade glioblastomas.

"In these two papers, we show how PKM2 is overexpressed in tumors, how it gets into the nucleus, that nuclear entry is essential to tumor development, and identified potential drugs and a biomarker that could usefully treat people," Lu said.

Mississippi Childhood Obesity Rate Slowly Improving Your Health ...

The obesity rate for Mississippi?s children has stabilized, but the same cannot be said of adults. A recent study shows that by 2030, 67 percent of Mississippi?s adults are projected to be obese.

These projections released in September by Trust for America?s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation would indicate a significant increase from Mississippi?s current 35 percent obesity rate, expecting the state to hold its title as ?the fattest state in the nation for at least two more decades,? according to an article printed in a September issue of Sun Herald written by AP Medical Writer Mike Stobbe.

Recent data collected from Child and Youth Prevalence of Obesity Surveys, however, shows childhood obesity in Mississippi has remained level since 2005.

?We are making some progress. We haven?t taken a downturn, but we also haven?t got any better,? state health officer Mary Currier said. ?Don?t expect it to be a quick change.?

A 2011 CAYPOS study revealed the 43.9 percent rate in 2005 of obesity and overweight children grades kindergarten through 12 to have gone down to 40.9 percent. The decrease, however, is not considered ?statistically significant.?

On the other hand, the rate of obese and overweight white students decreased from 40.6 to 34.8 percent. In addition, the elementary student rate went down to 37.3 percent in 2011 from 43 percent in 2005.

The study, published in the Journal of the Mississippi State Medical Association, states the prevalence of combined obese and overweight public school students ?no longer appears to be increasing,? information they refer to as ?encouraging news for the state.?

The leveling off of these statistics may be the result of countless school programs and campaign efforts to encourage healthier, more active lifestyles in students.

One of these programs, Project Fit America, recently awarded exercise equipment to Gautier Middle School and also provided staff-led cardiovascular health and lifetime fitness education programs to the students.

?This program is one of many efforts they are involved in,? said Executive Director Sheila Grogan of Blue Cross & Blue Shield Mississippi Foundation, which oversees Project Fit and other programs throughout the state, ?The unique thing about our foundation is we only fund programs without measurable outcomes that can be identified such as a decrease in BMI over time or improvements in physical fitness tests.?

Currier said there are many things happening to help the health situation, but many things still to be done.

With the Healthy Schools Act enacted in 2007, many schools have stopped frying foods and incorporated healthier options in vending machines. Currier said there also has been an increase in farmers markets and having access to locally grown, unprocessed foods which avoid the excess fats, sugars and salts.

?The main thing is we have to change our eating habits,? Currier said. ?We find any occasion or event and celebrate it with food; We bring a ham, a cake. We need to change the culture.?

Vivian Norris: A Buddhist Perspective on Nuclear Energy, Weapons and Taking Responsibility

While attending a weekend of meditation, prayer and the dedication of 108 statues of Amitabha, also known as the "Buddha of Buddhas," I had the chance to interview Sungjang Rinpoche. He is both a laughing spirit, yet beautifully focused young man who is recognized as the reincarnation, by the Dalai Lama, of the fourth Ngawang Drakpa, the disciple of Je Tsong Khapa, who founded the school of Dala?-lamas in the 15th century. Sungjang Rinpoche is living in exile at the Tatsang Ling monastery in France, and as more and more Tibetans flee the hardship and suffering in their native land, we are horrified to learn that the number of Tibetan Buddhist monks self-immolating has now reached at least 76 in the past few years. Petitions are circulating to help bring awareness to the horrific destruction of the environment, people and traditions of Tibet.

When I knew I would be interviewing Sungjang Rinpoche, I thought we would focus on Tibet, or Buddhism, but what we ended up talking about surprised me. When I asked him what he felt was the most important thing he could speak about to a wide audience, he replied, "We live in a dangerous time, of nuclear threats." He spoke of how these man-made threats, precisely because they were made by man, could also be stopped by man. And that we each had an important responsibility, not politicians, not governments, but each one of us, to take responsibility for our world. He spoke about Fukushima and how we do not really know how much radiation has already or will in the future rain down on us. Fukushima is still unstable yet we hear very little about it anymore. Sungjand Rinpoche said, "Fukushima releases a lot of radioactivity in the sky and it can fall on America, Alaska, China, Russia and Europe. We should end all nuclear energy because even that can be like a nuclear bomb. It will kill everybody. The main point is in society we have to change the dissatisfaction and selfishness to Love."

He spoke of the Cold War and how even though it is over, unstable nations with nuclear weapons threaten us. I was happily amazed at how he was completely focused on this issue of a nuclear threat which could destroy the planet and cause illnesses. I told him I had written a great deal about Fukushima and that I thought it was being forgotten. He repeated that we were destroying the future for our children, destroying the planet, and bringing about destruction which in Buddhist teachings is usually left to unkind, technologically advanced aliens travelling to Earth to bring about the Shambalic ending of this world.

This plain-speaking young man in his deep red and gold robes, praying with such intent for all of us, a living Buddha in his own right, expressed a deep compassion for the suffering of the entire planet and all of the living beings on it as he spoke of the nuclear threat. Interspersed with his usual child-like laughter, he would sway between a serious frowned brow and an open face smiling and sharing.

I asked him about the series of prayers we had dedicated to those who harm us, the humans who treat us cruelly and whose negative energy attempts to hurt us. We were taught that these people could be our greatest spiritual teachers and that we should in fact thank them. I asked him if the destruction and pollution of this planet could also have a lesson in it. He agreed and once again brought up the nuclear threats all around us. He spoke of the threat to all sentient beings, not just human beings. He spoke of how we need to no longer speak as countries as each country's interests destroys the others. He added, "Think globally. Act globally. We need to be careful not to hurt people. The Lord Buddha said do not destroy others' happiness for your own happiness."

"We are interdependent economically, environmentally, everything is connected. We are all human. We are all the same. We are all world citizens."

I wish to thank Celine Menguy for inviting myself and my daughter to participate during these amazing two days of dedication, initiation and prayer and Sofia Stril-Rever for all of her hard work and devoltion to Buddhism and hosting us at the monastery. My daughter and myself were extremely moved by the two days in the presence of someone who truly is focused on bringing more compassion to this world.

Report: Impunity endangers Somalia's journalists

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Somalia's journalists are urging their new government and the international community to help end the impunity they say is contributing to making Somalia one of the world's most dangerous countries to practice journalism.

So far 18 Somali journalists have been killed this year and 44 since 2007.

The National Union of Somali Journalists on Friday said that impunity has become a fundamental problem in Somalia. Journalists in almost every region of the country commonly face harassment, blackmail, arbitrary police detention and, in addition, criminals are hired to suppress them, said the group in a report to mark the International Day to End Impunity, sponsored by the free expression group, IFEX.

"Despite this, the authorities provide no support to journalists, and the perpetrators operate with impunity," the report said. Journalism in Somalia has reached a state of emergency, said the report. None of these crimes are investigated properly, much less prosecuted, despite successive administrations, the report said.

No action has ever been taken following a case of violence against a Somali journalist, the report said.

Journalists are being targeted to silence them from speaking against corruption, violence and violations of human rights by radical Islamist groups, said Somali Journalist Mohamed Bashir Hashi.

"We are on the lookout behind our backs every minute because media is getting lots of enemies in Somalia," said Hashi, a reporter with the local Shabelle radio in Somalia.

Somalia's government should implement judicial reforms that will aid free and fair trials, as well as provide judicial protection for the media and ensure that police adhere to the law, according to the report titled "Impunity: War on Somali Journalists." The international community can assist Somalia's federal government to put in place effective and functional public law and order, the report said.

Somalia has made significant strides politically this year in trying to establish its first functional government to move the country away from its failed state status.

A new interim constitution has been passed, a new parliament was seated and a new president was voted in. Somali elders were tasked with naming the parliament since no election could be held, given the state of security around the country. Parliament in turn elected a new president who named a prime minister, who announced his cabinet earlier this month.

Although Somalia has had transitional administrations since 2004, it has not had a functioning central government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a longtime dictator and turned on each other, plunging the impoverished nation into chaos. The transitional governments lacked legitimacy and were accused of corruption.

The parliament last week voted to reduce the Cabinet to 10 members, in a sign Somalia's government may be willing to move away from its corrupt past.

African Union troops have helped to push Islamist extremists called al-Shabab out of all Somalia's major cities, giving the newly elected government a chance to rebuild the country.

The International Federation of Journalist says the al-Qaida-affiliated al-Shabaab has a bloody record of maiming and killing journalists who do not toe their line.

With Hizbul-Islam, another hardline insurgent group, they have in recent years ratcheted up pressure on radio stations, first and foremost to ascertain their authority on what goes on air and, most importantly, to impose Taliban-type commandments on un-Islamic music, ringtones, film and football, said Jim Boumelha, the IFJ president.

Boumelha said September was the bloodiest month as renewed killings of journalists may have been triggered by the recent change of government.

On September 20, suicide bombers blew themselves in a restaurant in Mogadishu killing three journalists and wounding five others. The following day another journalist, Hassan Yusuf Absuge, working for Radio Maanta, was shot dead near his station, Mogadishu. Al-Shabaab claimed that their supporters did it.

"With a new speaker of parliament, a new president and a new cabinet, the Somali journalists and their union expect a new beginning and a fresh commitment to protect journalists and tackle impunity as a priority and to promote the right to free expression," he said.

New insights into virus proteome: Unknown proteins of the herpesvirus discovered

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? The genome encodes the complete information needed by an organism, including that required for protein production. Viruses, which are up to a thousand times smaller than human cells, have considerably smaller genomes. Using a type of herpesvirus as a model system, the scientists of the Max Planck Institute (MPI) of Biochemistry in Martinsried near Munich and their collaboration partners at the University of California in San Francisco have shown that the genome of this virus contains much more information than previously assumed.

The researchers identified several hundred novel proteins, many of which were surprisingly small. The results of the study have now been published in Science.

More than 80 percent of the world's population is infected with the herpesvirus, which can cause severe diseases in newborns and in persons with weakened immune system. Researchers had already sequenced the herpesvirus genome 20 years ago, thinking they could then predict all proteins that the virus produces (virus proteome). Now scientists from the research department of Matthias Mann, director at the MPI of Biochemistry, and their American colleagues have analyzed the information content of the genome more precisely.

Small but highly complex

To carry out their study, the scientists infected cells with herpesvirus and observed which proteins the virus produced inside the cell over a period of 72 hours. In order for proteins to be produced at all, the cell machinery must first make copies of the genetic material as intermediate products (RNA). While investigating the intermediate products of the herpesvirus, the American collaborators discovered many novel RNA molecules which were in large part surprisingly short.

They also found that the organization of information required for protein production in the virus genome was far more complex than previously assumed. Annette Michalski, a scientist in the Department of Proteomics and Signal Transduction at the MPI of Biochemistry, was subsequently able to confirm directly the predicted viral proteins in the infected cell using mass spectrometry. This method enables an overview of the complete proteome of the virus-infected cell.

The results of the American and German researchers provide detailed insight into the complex mechanisms used by the virus. "We showed that it's not enough merely to know the virus genome to understand the biology of the herpesvirus," Annette Michalski said. "What is important is to look at the products actually produced from the genome." Even human genes may be much more complex than the genome sequence itself indicates, commented the researchers. Matthias Mann and his colleagues plan to investigate this question further in the coming years.

Beneficial microbes are 'selected and nurtured' in the human gut

Animals, including humans, actively select the gut microbes that are the best partners and nurture them with nutritious secretions, suggests a new study led by Oxford University, and published November 20 in the open-access journal PLOS Biology.

The Oxford team created an evolutionary computer model of interactions between gut microbes and the lining (the host epithelial cell layer) of the animal gut. The model shows that beneficial microbes that are slow-growing are rapidly lost, and need to be helped by host secretions, such as specific nutrients, that favour the beneficial microbes over harmful ones.

The work also shows that the cost of such selectivity is low: the host only needs to use a very small amount of secretions to retain beneficial microbes that would otherwise have been lost.

"The cells of our bodies are greatly outnumbered by the microbes that live on us and, in particular, in our gut," said Professor Kevin Foster of Oxford University's Department of Zoology, an author of the new paper. "We know that many gut microbes are highly beneficial to us, protecting us from pathogens and helping us with digestion, but quite how such a beneficial mutual relationship evolved, and how it is maintained, has been something of a mystery."

"This research highlights the importance of growth-promoting substances in our ability to control the microbes that live inside us. It shows that nutrients are more powerful when released by the host epithelial cell layer than when coming from the food in the gut, and suggests that controlling our microbes is easier than was previously thought."

Jonas Schulter, also of Oxford University's Department of Zoology and first author of the paper, said: "The inside of our gut is rather like a war zone, with all kinds of microbes battling it out for survival and fighting over territory. Our study shows that hosts only have to secrete a small quantity of substances that slightly favour beneficial microbes to tip the balance of this conflict: it means that favoured microbial species that would otherwise be lost don't just survive on the epithelial surface but expand, pushing any other strains out."

The team's simulations show that cells affected by host epithelial selection are least likely to be lost, and instead persist longest, causing 'selectivity amplification', whereby relatively tiny changes instituted by the host (in this case a very small amount of secretions of certain compounds) can be amplified to produce a large-scale effect.

The study may have wider implications than the human gut: selectivity amplification may occur in a range of other interactions between hosts and microbes, including the microbes that grow on the surface of corals and the roots of plants.
