slideshow Shorter University head men?s basketball coach Chad Warner was selected as one of 15 finalists for the John McLendon National Coach of the Year award, according to a story on the web site CollegeInsider.com on Wednesday evening.Warner joins an elite group of finalists that also includes Kentucky?s John Calipari, Michigan State?s Tom Izzo, Missouri?s Frank Haith and Notre Dame?s Mike Brey.
The John McLendon award is presented annually to the top collegiate head coach encompassing all levels.
The winner will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet on March 30 in New Orleans, site of the NCAA Men?s Basketball Championship.
?Being on a list with those names is an honor,? said Warner. ?This award recognizes a great season that is only possible with a great administration, a great staff and great players. I work for tremendous people and was fortunate to have a bunch of really good players ? for those things I am very thankful. We had a very special year and we are grateful for that.?
The season was indeed memorable for Warner and his Hawks.
The fifth-year head coach guided Shorter to a school record and NAIA-best 34 wins, took Shorter to its first ever national No. 1 ranking, and led Shorter to the Final Four of the NAIA national tournament in their first-ever appearance in the national tourney.
He also helped the Hawks to the program?s first regular season conference title since 1977 and the school?s first Southern States Athletic Conference tournament championship.
Warner, who won his 100th career game in Shorter?s 90-63 win over Brewton-Parker on Feb. 18, was named the SSAC Coach of the Year and last week picked up the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) NAIA National Coach of the Year award.
?Chad?s nomination for this prestigious award is just another indication of the great year enjoyed by both he and our basketball program,? said Shorter?s Director of Athletics Bill Peterson. ?We are so proud of Chad and his team and all they have accomplished. What a year!?
A trailblazer and one of the true pioneers of the game, McLendon became the first African American coach to win an integrated national championship. His team went on to win the NAIA Division I Men?s Tournament in 1957, 1958 and 1959, making him the first coach in history to win three consecutive NAIA championships.
In 1962 he became the first African American head coach in a major professional league (ABL) with the Cleveland Pipers. In 1966 he became the first African American head coach of predominantly white university, when he took over the Cleveland State program. He led the team to their best record in school history.
In 1969, McLendon was hired by the Denver Rockets and became the first African American head coach in the American Basketball Association. After a brief stint with the Rockets, McLendon ended his 25-year professional coaching career with a winning percentage of .760 and a lifetime career average of 523 victories and 165 losses.
