Helping breast cancer patients with meals | Cancer Kick

When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, cooking meals for her family sometimes lands on the back burner.

Now a program based on the idea of ?Meals on Wheels? is rolling up to the homes of these patients.

Treatments for breast cancer can often tire patients out by mealtime, and can take a woman away from her family.

A partnership of three healthcare agencies is helping to give back that time to some of these women.

Robyn Murphy reviewed a menu for lunch with her sister Kelly.

Robyn had breast cancer surgery in July and frozen meals are helping her out.

She had both breasts removed; there was a cancer in each.

?As far as stretching and bending and I was sore and I had drains on each side and I couldn?t cook for the first week,? Murphy said.

Step in ?Magnolia Meals at Home?, a partnership among three agencies to provide up to 17 meals a month to patients and their families.

?Meals are a very important part in the role of a woman. Sometimes they?re not able to do it while they?re in treatment,? said Kathy Nugent, of CancerCare.

Kathy?s recent surgery made her eligible for the service. Others who qualify are those with breast cancers which have spread, those on chemotherapy, radiation or hormone treatment.

These meals are supervised by a nutritionist to be healthy; they?re low fat, balanced in carbs and protein, with lots of fruits and vegetables.

There are also desserts! The meals come to the door once a month for six months.

?It?s not to cook for everyday, it?s to help out and when I don?t feel like it,? Murphy said.

The meals are free, although not every woman accepts the idea at first.

?I really try to encourage women, ?give yourself a break?. It?s an opportunity to do self care, to take care of yourself, it?s ok because sometimes we need permission to do something like this,? Nugent said.

The three partner agencies support the costs of the food and the delivery.

Each meal lists the ingredients on the package to help those with food allergies.
