Last week I wrote about the restaurant, TRAM-TRAM in Sarri? and mentioned another, very different restaurant in Sarri?, El Vell Sarri?.
When you visit Barcelona you?ll likely want to try a paella or other rice dish. And why not? You?ll be spoiled for choice for places serving paellas ? and paellas of every kind, of various sizes and various price points, and wildly varying quality. And, you could always pick up a paella to take away or have a paella delivered to your hotel or rented apartment.
Here?s a tip if you want to try a good lunchtime paella: Thursday is traditionally rice day in Catalunya and Spain, and many restaurants will serve at least one rice dish ? often a paella as a first or second course choice of a good men? del d?a. On Thursdays, Morryssom?s is a good bet if you want a good paella as a first course, while El Roure, in Gr?cia, is a good choice if you want a paella as a second course. The three-course men? del d?a paella option will cost between ?8.50 and, say, ?16?though, obviously, you could pay a lot more.
If you want to try a paella, or other rice dish, as a main course from an ? la carte menu then be aware most places, though not all, will only serve it for a minimum of two people. Expect to pay anything between ?12 and ?35 per person.
(I will write about paella, it?s preparation, and the etiquette and rituals surrounding this emblematic dish?and the difference between paella and arr?s al forn, and other Catalan rice dishes, in a future post, or, likely, series of posts.)
El Vell Sarri? specialises in rice dishes, and you?ll have a choice of at least ten different rice dishes to choose from as a main course. It is probably the best restaurant in Barcelona for traditional Catalan rice dishes (arrossos).
The restaurant is situated in a building built in 1745. The ambience is traditional Catalan/Spanish rustic, with decorative tiles, dark wood, mirrors, chintzy paintings, knick-knacks and linen tablecloths.
All the dishes are prepared on?and in?a wood-fired stove.
There are a few variations on fish and seafood rice dishes (Mar ? or sea), and a few dishes from the interior (de campo ? countryside, or Muntanya ? mountain).
And, there?s a hybrid dish?a Mar i Muntanya (sea & mountain)?sort of surf and turf:
L?arr?s que em recorda la Font de ?Can Guitard? amb gambes, costella, s?pia.
This translates as: The rice dish which reminds me of the fountain at Can Guitard, with prawns, ribs and cuttlefish.
The dish also includes?artichoke, mussels, and?small crabs to flavour the broth it is cooked in.
The fountain alluded to is one of three in the hills of Parc de Sant Lloren?, a few miles north of the town of Terrassa.
The dish is so-called because it reminds the cook, who is now at the end of her sixties, of happy childhood al fresco Sunday afternoon extended family get-togethers when they would prepare and share a paella.
It?s a wonderful mixture of flavours and textures. It looks, and feels, like tasty, fertile, mud.
It?s a dish you won?t forget.

To get to Sarri? take any FGC train (except Line 7) from Pla?a Catalunya or Provenza stations in the city centre, or, if you?re staying in or around Gr?cia, from Gr?cia station.
?Bon profit!
